摘要:
A method of detecting the toner concentration of a two-component developer comprising a mixture of carrier particles and toner particles for use in an electrostatic copying apparatus or the like wherein a relationship between flow rate and the toner concentration of a two-component developer which passes through a container is obtained in advance, then the flow rate of the two-component developer whose toner concentration is unknown is measured by use of the container and developer flow rate detecting member. Thus, the toner concentration of the developer is determined from the measured flow rate and the relationship between the flow rate and the toner concentration which has been obtained in advance.

Deterioration of a dry developing substance causes toner particles to be so strongly adhered to carrier particles that they cannot be readily separated therefrom. The present apparatus comprises means for applying a predetermined electrostatic or air suction force to the developer to readily remove toner therefrom except for spent toner particles strongly adhered to the carrier particles. The toner density, or the ratio of toner to carrier particles, is then measured electromagnetically or optically and compared to a reference value. The developer deterioration determines what proportion of toner will be removed from the developer by said force and thereby the subsequently sensed toner density. The higher the sensed toner density, the greater the degree of deterioration.

A method of maintaining the correct conditions of an electrophotographically duplicated image, which uses a reference plate having at least a dark-tone area and a light-tone area and in which signals associated with the reference plate are detected and synthesized to control the duplicating process conditions such as developing bias potential, charge, exposure and of the optical system so that an optimum image may be produced.

An exposure unit radiates a light image of an original document onto a charged photoconductive member to form an electrostatic image through localized photoconduction. A developing unit applies a powdered developing substance comprising carrier particles and toner particles to the photoconductive member to develop the electrostatic image and produce a toner image which is transferred and fixed to a copy sheet to produce a permanent reproduction of the original document. The tone density, or the ratio of toner particles to carrier particles in the developing substance is electromagnetically measured, and the developing ability of the developing substance is opticaly measured. The developing substance is replaced when the difference between the toner density and developing ability exceeds a predetermined value. Prior to exposure with the light image a reference electrostatic image is formed on the photoconductive member and the electrostatic potential thereof is measured. The intensity of the light image of the original document and/or a developing bias voltage are regulated in accordance with the sensed electrostatic potential. The reference image may be of a reference surface having a predetermined optical density or a portion of the original document produced by reverse optical scanning.

A powdered toner mixture comprising a non-magnetic toner component and a ferromagnetic carrier component is caused to flow downwardly through a vertical conduit by gravity. An electromagnetic coil is wound around the conduit and energized with an alternating electric signal. An electrically conductive and magnetic mass is disposed inside the conduit. The permeability of the toner mixture decreases as the toner density, or the ratio of the toner component to the carrier component, increases. The lower the permeability of the toner mixture, the greater the proportion of magnetic flux passing through the mass. The flux passing through the mass induces eddy currents therein which, in combination with hysterisis and skin effect losses, dissipate a portion of the electric signal. The amount of power dissipation is a function of the relative proportion of flux through the mass and thereby the toner density and, when measured, provides a measure of the toner density.

The process and device are for use in an electrophotographic copying machine using a developing agent of liquid type. A counter-electrode is maintained closely spaced from the peripheral surface of a photosensitive drum bearing an electrostatic latent image thereon and itself electrically floating. The developing solution, which inherently has a substantial conductivity is supplied into the space between the drum surface and the counter-electrode so as to develop the latent image. During the development of latent image, a weak d.c. current flow, is passed between the counter-electrode and the drum through the segment of the developing solution filling the space so that a good relation between potentials on the drum surface and the counter-electrode is obtained to eliminate background smearing. The d.c. current may be controlled to decrease in value as the induced potential on the counter-electrode increases.

A developing unit for use with an electrophotographic copying apparatus of the type comprising a developing electrode and at least one corona discharger includes a conductive member arranged within a shield casing of the discharger for obtaining a voltage to be applied to the developing electrode as a bias voltage thereto. In the case where an a.c. discharger for charge elimination is being used in addition to the primary discharger, conductive members are incorporated with respective dischargers and the outputs from the conductive members are superimposed on each other and applied to the developing electrode. In this instance, the output of the conductive member associated with the a.c. discharger is continuously applied to the developing electrode after the de-energization of the primary discharger, i.e., the completion of developing an electrostatic latent image to thereby prevent the deposition of toner on the developing electrode.

An auto-bias developing process for developing an electrostatic latent image formed on a photosensitive member which includes the step of storing a detected potential in order to apply a fixed bias potential to a developing electrode plate wherein the surface potential of a photosensitive member is detected through a developing solution by a sensor electrode, and is stored in a memory circuit for subsequent conversion to a fixed bias potential which corresponds to the detected potential and is applied to the developing electrode. The process also includes the step of removing any toner which attaches to the developing electrode plate, by the application of a reverse bias potential thereto when the developing process is not taking place and the step of rendering the developing electrode plate electrically floating for removing toner from the plate and preventing deposition of toner onto the surface of the photosensitive member.
