Abstract:
An apparatus for driving a plasma display panel PDP that prevents a scan driving circuit from being damaged includes a plurality of address electrodes and scan electrodes and sustain electrodes arranged in a zig-zag pattern so as to make pairs with each other. The apparatus includes an address driving circuit, for applying an address signal for selecting a discharge cell to the address electrodes, and a sustain driving circuit and a scan driving circuit for alternately applying a sustain-discharge voltage to the scan electrodes and to the sustain electrodes, to thus sustain-discharge the selected discharge cell. The scan driving circuit includes a protecting circuit for uniformly sustaining an electric potential difference between both ends of the scan driving circuit so that the electric potential difference is no more than a rated voltage of the scan driving circuit.
Abstract:
Disclosed is a PDP driving method having a misfiring erase period between reset and address periods. Large amounts of positive and negative charges are respectively formed on scan and sustain electrodes because of an unstable reset operation in the reset period. Because of the charges, discharging can occur between the scan and sustain electrodes in the sustain period even without addressing in the address period. In the misfiring erase period, a voltage is applied between the scan and sustain electrodes to generate discharging and respectively form negative and positive charges on the scan and sustain electrodes. An erase pulse is then applied to erase the negative and positive charges respectively formed on the scan and sustain electrodes.

Abstract:
A PDP driving circuit for a stable operation of a ramp pulse. A capacitor having a temperature characteristic opposite to a temperature characteristic of a part coupled to a switch that operates as a constant current source for generation of a ramp pulse is arranged in the driving circuit for generating a ramp pulse. The ramp pulse linearly increases or decreases a panel voltage of the PDP with respect to time. Parts having opposite temperature characteristics are coupled in parallel to control variation of a gradient of the ramp pulse so that values of the parts may not be varied depending on the temperature changes. Thus, stable operation of the ramp pulse is obtained.

A method of driving (a plasma display device having a first electrode and a second electrode, a frame for display being divided into a plurality of subfields) includes: determining a number of sustain discharge pulses to be allocated to the subfields, respectively; and applying to the first electrode or the second electrode, during a sustain period for a given one of the subfields when the corresponding allocated number of sustain discharge pulses is greater than a reference number, a first quantity of first sustain discharge pulses each having a first cycle and a second quantity of second sustain discharge pulses each having a second cycle, the second cycle being different from the first cycle, and the first quantity of first sustain discharge pulses relating to the reference number.
Abstract:
A plasma display device includes: a sustain drive unit that applies a sustain pulse having a first voltage and a second voltage lower than the first voltage to a plurality of first electrodes; a scan drive unit including a plurality of selection circuits coupled to the first electrodes and each including first and second switches; and a clamping unit including a clamping diode coupled to at least one of the selection circuits and clamps the voltage of the first electrode at the first voltage when it exceeds the first voltage. The plasma display device can prevent overshoot that can occur when the first voltage of the sustain pulse is applied to the first electrode in a sustain period so as to apply a stable discharge pulse. The magnitude of the overshoot may depend on the distance between the scan driving board and each of the plurality of selection circuits IC.
Abstract:
A method of driving a Plasma Display Panel (PDP) while improving a brightness saturation phenomenon that is caused by an increase in the total number of sustain discharge pulses. A sustain discharge is performed by a plurality of first and second electrodes, a number of sustain discharge pulses for a subfield is provided based on a rate of load of an input signal, and first and second voltages are alternately and respectively supplied to the first and second electrodes in a sustain period according to the provided number of the sustain discharge pulses, the second voltage being greater than the first voltage. A duration in which the first voltage is increased to the second voltage is inversely proportional to the number of sustain discharge pulses for the subfield.

An energy recovery circuit for a display panel, which can normally operate at its initial operation stage, and a driving apparatus with the same includes, an energy storage unit, an energy recovery switching unit, an inductor, and a charge power supply unit. The energy storage unit recovers an electric charge from the panel capacitor and charging the panel capacitor with electric charge. The energy recovery switching unit controls charging of the electric charge to the panel capacitor from the energy storage unit and recovery of the electric charge from the panel capacitor to the energy storage unit. The inductor has one end connected to the energy recovery switching unit and the other end connected to the panel capacitor. The charge power supply unit supplies power to the energy storage unit.
