A fuel cell unit comprises two single cells with a pair of palladium/silver anodes and a pair of cathodes, one pair being arranged backto-back and having a common gas supply and the other pair being disposed one on each side of the unit and having separate gas supplies. As shown, the non-porous anodes 2.1 are arranged together with a common fuel chamber and the porous cathodes 1.1 are arranged at the outsides.
