Abstract: Herein are described processes for and machines adapted for the production of lithium coated conductive substrates having conductive substrate planar surfaces. The process can include providing a lithium coated conductive substrate and then calendering the coated-foil to provide the desired planar surface(s). In a preferable instance, the process provides double sided lithium carrying conducive substrates useful in lithium metal batteries. In another instance, the process provides single or double sided coated-foils carrying polymeric sheets. The machines for the production of the desired products preferably include apparatus for the deposition of lithium metal onto a conductive substrate and one or more calendering systems, preferable within a single vacuum chamber.

Abstract: A multi-layer, lithium anode assembly for use in a lithium-based battery can include a substrate region having a current collector comprising a continuous copper foil that is between 4 and 10 microns thick and has a lithium compatible support surface. A lithium hosting region may overlie the support surface and may include a lithium material film deposited directly onto the support surface via thermal evaporation and having a thickness that is between 1 microns and 10 microns. A cover region may be located outboard of the lithium hosting region and may have a cover film that is formed from a passivation material and covers the lithium material film. The cover region may allow a lithium ion flux between an electrolyte and the lithium hosting region and inhibiting irreversible reactions between the lithium hosting region and the electrolyte or surrounding environment.

Abstract: A vapor deposition system includes a drum. The drum includes a generally cylindrical drum core. A process ring is fixedly disposed on the drum core at a position radially outward of the drum core. The process ring includes an inner face that extends radially, an outer face that extends radially opposite the inner face, and an outer-facing surface extending between the inner face and the outer face. The outer-facing surface has a plurality of axial channels formed therethrough. A plurality of fluid coolant passages extends through the process ring. An annular gas channel is in communication with the plurality of axial channels. A fluid conduit assembly is configured to supply a fluid coolant to the fluid coolant passages and a thermal coupling gas to the annular gas channel. The axial channels direct thermal coupling gas toward the substrate.
