摘要: An emission control apparatus which can be used on an outdoor wood-fired boiler. Ambient air, which has a much higher concentration of available oxygen in relation to exhaust gases, is caused to be heated before being passed through catalyst-coated media along with exhaust gases, thereby improving the performance of the catalytic reaction. An embodiment also relates to an emission control apparatus having a housing with an internal wall and an external wall, the internal wall defining an exhaust flow path and having a catalyst-coated media disposed therein, at least one ambient air duct disposed within the housing between the internal wall and the external wall, where each ambient air duct includes an air inlet in the external wall of the housing and an air outlet in the internal wall of the housing in communication with the catalyst-coated media, insulation disposed within the housing between the internal wall and the external wall, and wherein the at least one ambient air duct and insulation are positioned such that, during operation of the emission control apparatus, ambient air enters through the air inlet, travels upwardly through the air duct on a cool exterior side of the insulation before turning and traveling back down on a hot interior side of the insulation where the ambient air is heated from conduction through the internal wall of the housing before being introduced into the catalyst-coated media.

摘要: Methods and systems for reducing combustion emissions generated in, or released from, a combustion chamber are provided. Systems and methods provided herein may be used to modify, for example, an existing fireplace such that combustion emissions resulting from burning a fuel combustion source are reduced. The method involves providing an emission reduction system which includes a casing assembly with at least one panel of a catalyst-coated media and a support structure supporting the casing assembly. The casing assembly is positioned between a fuel combustion source and a flue by associating the support structure with an interior surface of the firebox. The fuel combustion source is burned to create a fire, such that the catalyst-coated media reduces emissions associated with fuel combustion when contacted with combustion exhaust.

摘要: Pollutants in the exhaust from wood burning in a fireplace are removed by positioning reticulated foam between the smoke chamber and the flue. The reticulated foam is a three dimensional latticework of interconnected ligaments forming a porous, open-celled structure with a large internal surface area. The internal surfaces are coated with a catalytic material which converts pollutants in the exhaust to harmless compounds. Heat from the exhaust, when the fire is burning, maintains the catalyst at a temperature for efficient conversion operation. Thermostatically controlled heaters are embedded in the foam, or thermostatically controlled electrical current is applied directly to the catalyst, to raise the catalyst temperature when the fire is growing or smoldering, periods during which the exhaust temperature is insufficient for good conversion operation.
