    摘要: An anionic fluorescein homologue capable of selectively staining degenerating neurons in brain slices, the method of making the anionic fluorescein homologue, and the method of using the same for detecting neuronal degeneration. Two anionic fluorescein based fluorescent stains are the water soluble tribasic salt of a mixture of the fluorescein isomers 5-carboxyfluorescein and 6-carboxyfluorescein, and the water soluble tetrabasic salt of 5,6 dicarboxyfluorescein.

    摘要: A suspension bridge pickup mechanism for stringed musical instruments. Vibrations from the strings are transferred to a suspended bridge which is in contact at spaced points with resonator plates of a plurality of bimorphic piezoelectric elements. The bridge has a high length to transverse thickness ratio resulting in a signal of wide frequency range and high amplitude. The tonal characteristics and the relative harmonic content of the signal can be altered by selecting or rejecting specific transducers which will contribute to the output signal utilizing a switching circuit. The transducers may be positioned under different portions of the bridge resulting in greater low frequency response in the median region of the bridge, maximal mid frequency response in the paramedian region, and maximal high frequency response near the ends of the bridge. Resonator plates of large area and small thickness are employed for maximal reproduction of low frequencies and resonator plates of small area and greater thickness are employed for maximal reproduction of high frequencies. The instrument strings cross and are supported by the bridge asymmetrically of its length.

    摘要: A fluorescent retrograde axonal tracer method for use in neuroanatomical studies of the brain involves the use of dilute solutions of amidino-stilbene compounds or salts, specifically 2-hydroxy-4,4'-diamidinostilbene isethionate. The amidino stilbene tracer exhibits a high sensitivity and fluorescent intensity, retrogradely fills axons and dendrites extensively, is highly resistant to fading, is compatible with virtually all other histochemical procedures, and exhibits minimal uptake by fibers of passage. The method of using amidino stilbene or stilbamadine compounds involves injection of a dilute solution of the compound into the area of the brain to be studied. After a period of time, the tissue is examined under a fluorescence microscope.

    摘要: A novel aurophosphate stain for staining a slide-mounted brain tissue slice or section to label myelin therein, the method of staining, and the method of making the stain. The stain is potassium aurophosphate or sodium aurophosphate produced as the reaction product of an aurochloride and a dibasic potassium or sodium phosphate. Slide-mounted brain tissue slices are stained by immersing the slice in a warn solution of the aurophosphate. The stained slice may be intensified by immersing the slide-mounted stained tissue slice in a potassium tetrachloroaureate solution. The stained or intensified slice can be fixed by immersion in a sodium thiosulfate solution. Large bundles of stained myelin appear deep red-brown, while smaller bundles and individual fibers appear black.
