摘要: An apparatus and process for the micro juxtaposition is set forth where a selectively activatable surface is maintained spaced apart from the tissue sample and juxtaposed to the tissue sample by activation. In the typical case, activation occurs by laser radiation with the material of the activatable surface thermally expanding and bringing about the desired micro juxtaposition. The disclosed micro juxtapositioning can cause locally and microscopically pressure on tissue sample, insertion to the tissue sample, or contact of an activated or prepared surface to the tissue sample.

摘要: The present invention clarifies and contrasts stain intact biological tissue samples for microscopic analysis. A biological specimen is depigmented and then contacted with a fluorescent dye, wherein the dye stains the specimen nonspecifically. The depigmented, non-specifically stained specimen is equilibrated in a clearing solution, wherein the refractive index of the clearing solution approximates that of the specimen, thereby preparing the biological specimen for visual analysis.

摘要: A method of simultaneously staining for various opportunistic pathogens stains tissues sections with Ziehl-Neelsen carbo-fuchsin, Schiff reagent, and a mixture of metanil yellow and stock fast green solution. In particular, the method is useful for staining tissue sections suspected of containing opportunistic pathogens commonly found in AIDS patients, i.e., acid fast mycobacteria, fungus, and Pneumocystis carinii.

摘要: An apparatus and method for producing tissue slides is disclosed. The apparatus includes a holding assembly for manipulating the sample block, a blade assembly for preparing a thin section from the sample block, and a transfer roller mechanism for transferring the thin section to a receiving medium. The apparatus further includes a controller that may track the sample block and thin section. The method includes the steps of first locating a sample embedded within a support medium, which may be paraffin or a similar medium. Next, the embedded sample is oriented in such a way that its working surface is presented. This orientation may entail determining the orientation of the embedded sample with respect to the blade that will produce the largest cross-sectional area. Next, a slice of the sample from said embedded sample is removed and subsequently transferred to a suitable receiving medium, which may include a microscope slide.

摘要: A novel aurophosphate stain for staining a slide-mounted brain tissue slice or section to label myelin therein, the method of staining, and the method of making the stain. The stain is potassium aurophosphate or sodium aurophosphate produced as the reaction product of an aurochloride and a dibasic potassium or sodium phosphate. Slide-mounted brain tissue slices are stained by immersing the slice in a warn solution of the aurophosphate. The stained slice may be intensified by immersing the slide-mounted stained tissue slice in a potassium tetrachloroaureate solution. The stained or intensified slice can be fixed by immersion in a sodium thiosulfate solution. Large bundles of stained myelin appear deep red-brown, while smaller bundles and individual fibers appear black.

摘要: A novel encoding system and methods for determining the location and/or identity of a particular item or component of interest is provided. In particular, the present invention utilizes a “barcode” comprising one or more sizes of semiconductor nanocrystals (quantum dots) having characteristic spectral emissions, to either “track” the location of a particular item of interest or to identify a particular item of interest. The semiconductor nanocrystals used in the inventive “barcoding” scheme can be tuned to a desired wavelength to produce a characteristic spectral emission in narrow spectral widths, and with a symmetric, nearly Gaussian line shape, by changing the composition and size of the quantum dot. Additionally, the intensity of the emission at a particular characteristic wavelength can also be varied, thus enabling the use of binary or higher order encoding schemes. The information encoded by the quantum dot can be spectroscopically decoded, thus providing the location and/or identity of the particular item or component of interest. In particular, a single primary light source can be used to decode the inventive barcode. In particularly preferred embodiments, the present system and method is used in applications to security systems, to the tracking of consumer items such as jewelry, vehicles, or paper. In other particularly preferred embodiments, the present system and method is used in applications for biochemistry to track the location of biomolecules such as DNA sequences, combinatorial chemistry, and genomics for encoding and probe identifiers.
