Abstract: A windshield having a replaceable surface comprising a protective glass sheet having an optical coupling medium attached to the inner surface thereof which is contiguous with the outer surface of the windshield being protected. The optical coupling medium preserves the optical qualities of the assembly while bonded only to the protective shield layer and not to the windshield itself.
