The multiple channels used in an OFDMA transmission may use different mid-amble settings based on their respective channel characteristics. Particularly, some channels may have mid-ambles and some may have not, and mid-amble update intervals may vary across the channels. For a trigger-based (TB) uplink (UL) OFDMA transmission, an AP may signal the per-user mid-amble information in the user information fields of the trigger frame. For a downlink (DL) OFDMA transmission, an AP may signal the per-user mid-amble information in the HE SIG-B fields.

Systems and methods of WLAN communication including efficient spatial reuse mechanisms for relay transmissions between a repeater network and non-AP STAs in OFDMA. The non-AP STAs are grouped based on their connectivity with the individual repeaters and the radio coverage regions of the repeaters. Each group is either a non-overlapping group with the constituent non-AP STAs located in a non-overlapping coverage region of a particular repeater, or an overlapping group with the constituent non-AP STAs located in an overlapping coverage region of two or more repeaters. Based on the grouping, certain RUs (or subchannels) are reused for multiple groups without causing inter-group interference, thereby expanding the bandwidths used in the relay operations. RU allocation based on grouping can be used in combination with transmit power adjustment to achieve efficient spatial reuse in OFDMA.

Methods and apparatus are provided for a many to one communication protocol. In one novel aspect, a modified CTS is sent by a receiving wireless communications station in response to a regular RTS. The modified CTS includes an indication for an uplink MU operation. In one embodiment, a modified CTS indicates a restricted access window (RAW) followed by RAW parameter set (RPS). In one embodiment, a subset of wireless communications devices associated with the receiving wireless communications station sends modified PS-poll with uplink data indication. Such PS-poll traffic is protected from passerby wireless communications devices from an OBSS. The receiving wireless communications station sends a modified resource-allocation map frame followed by a regular CTS frame. The subsets of wireless communications devices send their uplink data based on the received resource allocation map. The RTS-originating wireless station either sends its data frame earlier or concurrently with other wireless communications devices.

A method of indicating feedback mode and providing corresponding sub-channel feedback in OFDMA systems is provided. A transmitting device transmits a sounding announcement frame and a sounding signal to a receiving device. The sounding signal is transmitted over multiple sub-channels of a wide channel. The transmitting device also provides a feedback mode indication. The receiving device estimates channel quality information based on the received sounding signal and the feedback mode indication. The receiving device then sends feedback information to the transmitting device. The feedback information contains the estimated channel quality information of a selected set of sub-channels based on the feedback mode indication.
