    Abstract: Systems, methods, and computer-readable media for automatically altering information within an electronic document based on an externally detected occurrence are disclosed. The systems and methods may involve accessing an electronic word processing document; displaying an interface presenting at least one tool for enabling an author of the electronic word processing document to define an electronic rule triggered by an external network-based occurrence; receiving, in association with the electronic rule, a conditional instruction to edit the electronic word processing document in response to the network-based occurrence; detecting the external network-based occurrence; and in response to the detection of the external network-based occurrence, implementing the conditional instruction and thereby automatically edit the electronic word processing document.

The systems and methods may involve accessing the electronic word processing document; identifying in the electronic word processing document a variable data element; accessing the external file identified in the link; pulling, from the external file, first replacement data corresponding to the current data; replacing the current data in the electronic word processing document with the first replacement data; identifying a change to the variable data element in the electronic word processing document; upon identification of the change, accessing the external file via the link; and updating the external file to reflect the change to the variable data element in the electronic word processing document.

The systems and methods may involve accessing an electronic collaborative document; receiving from a first editor operating in a collaborative mode, first edits to the electronic collaborative document; outputting second display signals to the first editor and a second editor, the second display signals reflecting the first edits made by the first editor; in a private mode, receiving from the first editor, second edits to the electronic collaborative document; and in response to the second edits, outputting third display signals to the first editor while withholding the third display signals from the second editor, such that the second edits are enabled to appear on a display of the first editor and are prevented from appearing on at least one display of the second editor.
