Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing an audible identification of a device is provided herein. During operation, device identities will be determined for members forming a personal-area network (PAN). When information is conveyed by a device, a determination of whether or not to announce a device identification will be based on a combination of PAN members present. More particularly, when a certain combination of devices are members of the PAN, device identifications will be announced, otherwise, device identifications will not be announced.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlling a volume of a device is provided herein. During operation, a first device will receive a volume-adjustment message from a second device, along with an identity of an active application being run on the second device. The volume-adjustment message indicates whether or not the second device increased or decreased their volume. The first device will increase or decrease their volume in a similar manner as the second device if the first device is currently running a same active application as the second device; otherwise the first device will adjust its volume in an opposite direction as indicated in the volume-adjustment message.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for managing a touch-screen device is provided herein. During operation UI elements are arranged and re-arrange dynamically and based on user's current contact locations on the touch screen. Preferably, the contact positions correspond to a user's finger positions so that the UI elements are automatically placed where a person's fingers make contact with the touch screen. Because the UI elements on the touch screen always “look for” the user's fingers, instead of the user looking for them, it becomes much easier and more time-efficient for a user to find a particular UI element.

Abstract: Example devices, systems, and methods for emulating a PTT device at an incident location are provided. An example server receives a request for a remote push-to-talk (PTT) device to be emulated at a target location in a vicinity of an incident, selects local communication infrastructure that supports public safety services for local PTT devices located near the target location, and transmits, to the local communication infrastructure, instructions for the local communication infrastructure to register an emulated PTT device as a proxy for the remote PTT device at the target location.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for operating a portable radio communication device is provided. The portable radio communication device receives communications on a primary channel and a secondary channel during a dual-watch mode of operation. The portable radio communication device determines whether the portable radio communication device is proximate to a subject. The portable radio communication device suppresses audio from communications of one of the two channels and plays audio from communications of the other channel when the portable communication device is proximate to the subject. Additionally, the portable radio communication device allows transmission to occur only over the channel in which communication is not suppressed when the portable communication device is proximate to the subject.
