摘要： Set forth is a method of forming an electrophoretic display device that includes locating a multiplicity of individual reservoirs containing a display fluid between conductive substrates, at least one of which is transparent, to form a device, wherein the display fluid comprises at least two sets of particles in a liquid medium, the at least two sets of particles exhibiting a different color, and charging each of the sets of particles to have a different charge via application of an electric field to the device. This field induced charging of the sets of differently colored particles enables low conductivity particles with superior electrophoretic mobility to be achieved.

摘要： A method of displaying an image in an electrophoretic display device includes charging each of the sets of differently colored particles to have a different charge through application of an electric field to the display fluid or the device, and then applying an electric field to selected ones of the multiplicity of reservoirs to effect movement of one or more of the differently colored sets of particles in the display fluid therein to display a desired color derived from among the sets of differently colored particles. The colors are shown by way of the particle set or sets moved to be closet to the viewing side conductive substrate of the device. The device may include at least one display layer, including a multiplicity of individual reservoirs containing a display fluid, between conductive substrates, at least one of which is transparent and thus may be a viewing side substrate, wherein the display fluid includes at least two sets of particles in a liquid medium, the at least two sets of particles exhibiting a different color.

摘要： An electrophoretic display device includes a display layer comprised of a binder having a multiplicity of individual cavities therein that contain a display medium, and conductive substrates, at least one of the conductive substrates being transparent, wherein the display layer is located in between the conductive substrates, and wherein the display medium comprises one or more set of colored particles in a dielectric fluid and has an electrical conductivity of about 10−11 to about 10−15 S/m. The display device may be made by forming composite particles comprised of a sacrificial binder and the one or more set of particles of the display medium; mixing the composite particles with the binder to form a mixture; forming a layer from the mixture; removing the sacrificial binder from the composite particles in the layer to form cavities in the layer that contain the one or more set of colored particles; and filling the cavities with the dielectric fluid.

In the methods, a rectangular waveform switching voltage is applied to the gyricon display device and the reflectance of the display device is measured in order to determine the dipole charge based upon the measured reflectance, and a triangular waveform switching voltage is applied to the gyricon display device and current of the display device is measured to determine the monopole charge based upon the measured current.
