An absorbent composite structure suitable for absorbing aqueous body fluids is provided which includes a substrate having two surfaces, a plurality of hydrogel-forming polymer particles and a chemical cross-linking agent capable of bonding to both the substrate and the hydrogel-forming particles. In at least a substantial portion of the structure, the majority of the hydrogel-forming polymer particles are connected by the chemical cross-linking agent directly to at least one of the substrate surfaces. The absorbent composite structure can be incorporated into an absorbent article. A method of making the absorbent composite structure is also disclosed.

An absorbent core comprises, in sequence through it thickness, a first structure comprising an upper layer comprising a first fibrous material having compressibility of at least 5 cm.sup.3 /g and a drip capacity of a least 10 g/g, the structure also comprising a first superabsorbent material having a substantially non-decreasing dynamic swelling rate and a second a structure comprising a second fibrous material and a second superabsorbent material having a dynamic swelling pressure of at least 15 g/g at 10 g/cm.sup.2 (0.7 psi), wherein the dynamic swelling rate of the first superabsorbent material is not greater than 2/3 of the dynamic swelling rate of the second superabsorbent material. The absorbent core allows improved fluid handling of body discharges throughout the core and in the subsequent efficient storage of these discharges.

The absorbent gelling material in accordance with the invention is characterized in that the first type of hydrogel-forming particles has an Absorption Against Pressure value which is higher than the Absorption Against Pressure value of the second type of hydrogel-forming particles, the weight of the second type of hydrogel-forming particles forming at least 10% of the combined weight of the first and second type of hydrogel forming particles. In addition, the region where this hydrogel-forming absorbent polymer is present has, even when subjected to normal use conditions, sufficient wet integrity such that the gel-continuous zone substantially maintains its ability to acquire and transport body fluids through the gel-continuous zone.
