Bearing surfaces of the hydrostatic support elements and running or travel surfaces at the roll shell are spherically designed, for instance provided in mirror-image relationship to one another at both ends of the press roll, or at only one end thereof, or at the central or intermediate region of the press roll.

The controlled deflection roll comprises a rotatable roll shell supported at a stationary support member by means of a plurality of hydrostatic pressure elements. The hydrostatic pressure elements are sealingly movably guided by guide structure, for example, bores, which define cylinder chambers. Each cylinder chamber is connected by a feed system comprising a feed channel to a source of a hydraulic pressure medium. Between each feed channel and the related hydrostatic pressure element, there is arranged a damping body provided with at least one throttle location, for example throttle bores, through which the hydraulic pressure medium can flow. The damping body defines essentially the only connection between the feed channel and the cylinder chamber. Possibly occurring oscillations or vibrations of the rotatable roll shell relative to the stationary support member are damped by these damping bodies and, accordingly, transmission of such oscillations or vibrations to the hydraulic pressure medium feed system is prevented.

The apparatus for neutralizing overhanging loads is supported at the roll stand of a calender which opens in downward direction. This apparatus is arranged at both sides of a roll and, during operation, presses from below against the roll suspensions in a predetermined or required position of the roll. This is accomplished by a force which compensates for the overhanging loads. This force is generated or set by movable force transmitters, dimensionally deformable force transmitters or displaceable force transmitters. Upon opening the calender, a force greater than the set force acts upon the load neutralizing apparatus and the force transmitters are moved, dimensionally deformed or displaced, as the case may be, such that a displacement path of the roll into a lower lowered position is provided. The force transmitters for generating the force which compensates for the overhanging loads can be a spring assembly, an air spring or a column or head of liquid supported by a gas cushion.

An apparatus for determining the pressure forces effective in a rolling mill having at least one controlled deflection roll and at least one counter roll, there being provided beams for simulating the stiffness or rigidity of the counter roll and the shell of the controlled deflection roll. These are further provided pressure elements which simulate the effect of the hydrostatic pressure or support elements of the controlled deflection roll, and measuring elements serve to measure the pressure between the beams. External pressure elements can serve to simulate the effect of external contact or pressure cylinders. With a rolling mill having a number of controlled deflection rolls and a number of solid counter rolls, the beams, the pressure elements and the measuring elements can be appropriately grouped or assembled together. The measuring elements deliver signals which can be employed for controlling or regulating a corresponding rolling mill which is simulated.

A method of, and washing machine or washer for, washing stock suspensions, wherein a rotatable cylinder having a solid smooth surface is encircled along a portion of its circumference by a movable endless wire or filter band. The stock suspension to be dewatered and washed is infed by a flat jet nozzle between the rotatable solid cylinder and the movable endless wire. The fiber web formed between the rotatable solid cylinder and the movable endless wire has a weight of less than 100 grams per square meter, preferably 30 to 70 grams per square meter. The wire speed and the circumferential speed of the rotatable solid cylinder is in the order of about 400 to 1,200 meters per minute. After through-flow of the stock suspension between the rotatable solid cylinder and the movable endless wire, the dewatered and washed fiber material is removed from the movable endless wire and the rotatable solid cylinder, respectively, collected in a collecting container and delivered for further processing. At least selected portions of the contaminated water removal from the washed fiber material is fed to a clarifier and the clear water recycled back by means of a mixing pump to the washing machine.

It is preferred to include force compensating means for transmitting circumferential forces between the rotors. The position detectors act upon regulators for regulating a force differential between a larger pressing force exerted by bottom or lower support elements in relation to a lesser pressing force exerted by top or upper support elements. The excess or resultant of the pressing force produced by the bottom support or pressure elements decreases with increasing height of the position of the rolls until there is established an equilibrium position. During operation there exists an equilibrium condition between the upwardly directed force of the bottom support elements and the sum of the downwardly directed pressing force of the upper or top support elements and the weight of all of the parts therebetween.
