In a reception device (4, 5) for receiving and processing a transmission signal (US), with reception means (I) for receiving the transmission signal (US), which comprises information data (EPG, VOD) identifying the information content (II) of display information (AI) that can be represented on a display device (6, 7), and which comprises representation-describing data (SK), which identifies the nature of the representation of information contents (II) to be represented on the display device (6, 7), and with processing means (V) for processing this received data (EPG, SK, VOD), and with delivery means (AM) for delivering a display signal (AS) to the display device (6, 7) for displaying the information content (II), the information data (EPG, VOD) and representation-describing data (SK) transmitted in the transmission signal (US) are written in a common Markup Language, but can be transmitted independently of one another in the transmission signal (US), and the processing means (V) comprise only one parser (P) for processing this received data (EPG, SK, VDO).

For the automatic assignment of an identification (SSID2) which designates a network (1), network server means (3) and access means (4) connected to these network server means are used, wherein the access means (4) are set up for communication with at least one network client (6) and the network server means (3) are operated to generate a network (1) which is defined by a provisional, preset identification (SSID1) which is known to the network client (6), and wherein a communication is made between the network server means (3) and the network client (6) via the access means (4), and the network server means (3) send to the network client (6) a new identification (SSID2) which they have generated, which is used for final designation of the network (1).

A method and system for transmitting channels to at least one digital video recorder is described. A server receives at least one recording schedule from a plurality of digital video recorders (step 304). A subset of channels is selected from the channels associated with the at least one program identification of the received at least one recording schedule (step 306). Information is transmitted from the server to at least one of the plurality of digital video recorders, the information indicating channels associated with the at least one program identification of the at least one recording schedule that were not selected (step 308). The selected subset of channels is also transmitted from the server to at least one of the plurality of digital video recorders (step 310).
Abstract:
The system, apparatus and method, of the present application offers the viewer a set of typical virtual channel types based on some predefined or definable category, e.g., news channel, which includes predefined default settings and behavior. These typical virtual channel ‘templates’ make it very easy for a viewer to specify a virtual channel. For example, for a news channel, the default behavior is to only keep the most current coverage, for a series, the default behavior is to keep all until watched. Such a typical virtual channel can be selected explicitly or implicitly. In addition, a virtual channel wizard is provided by the system, apparatus, and method of the present invention that interactively guides a viewer through setting up own templates.

In a “Pay per view” system (5), a playback device (1,2,3) of a user of the “Pay per view” system (5) obtains a playback authorization by an authorizing device (4) from a recording carrier (13,14) before playback of a coded playback information item (CWI) of a chargeable film. For granting the playback authorization, the authorizing device (4) bills a playback charge to the user. Inter alia, recorder identification information items (RKWI) identifying recording devices (1,2) that have contributed to creating the copy of the recording carrier (13,14) played back by the playback device (1,2,3) are stored on the recording carrier (13,14). In the course of granting the playback authorization, bonus information evaluating means (21,22) store the recorder identification information items (RKWI) transferred by playback devices (1,2,3) to the bonus information evaluating means (21,22). At billing instants, the bonus information evaluating means (21,22) transfer a bonus information item (BI) for the users of the recording devices (1,2) identified by the recorder identification information items (RKWI) and grant these users benefits.

The internet receiving arrangement has a quality test device for testing whether the received information data have a satisfactory quality. If the quality value of the received information data detected by the quality detector is below a quality threshold value, then the internet addresses stored in the internet receiving arrangement are updated with internet addresses of the information servers which are stored in an address server connected to the internet.
