    摘要: Provided is an optical modulator capable of efficiently separating radiation light and propagation light from each other or removing the radiation light in the optical modulator to suppress loss of the optical modulator and deterioration of an extinction ratio. In the optical modulator including a thin plate made of a material having an electrooptic effect and having a thickness of 20 μm or less; an optical waveguide formed in a top surface or a bottom surface of the thin plate; and a modulation electrode which is formed in the top surface of the thin plate to modulate light which propagates in the optical waveguide, the optical waveguide has an optical junction portion in which a plurality of optical waveguide portions are joined together and a shielding means for shielding a portion of radiation light radiated from the optical junction portion. The shielding means is a concave portion or a thorough-hole formed in the thin plate, a shortest distance from the waveguide to the shielding means is 5 to 10 μm, and the length of the shielding means in a direction perpendicular to the waveguide is at least 0.5 times the diameter of a fiber.

    摘要: A light control device with a reduced electric loss is provided which can suppress a phenomenon of electrically reflecting a high-frequency signal even when it employs a dielectric anisotropic substrate. A light control device includes a signal electrode formed on a dielectric anisotropic substrate and ground electrodes disposed with the signal electrode interposed therebetween. Here, the signal electrode includes at least two signal electrode portions disposed in directions in which the dielectric constant of the substrate is different from each other and a curved connecting portion connecting the at least two signal electrode portions. The connecting portion is configured so that the characteristic impedance in parts connected to the at least two signal electrode portions is equal to that of the corresponding signal electrode portion, and the characteristic impedance in the connecting portion between the at least two signal electrode portions continuously varies.

A Mach-Zehnder waveguide type optical modulator is provided which includes a thin plate 1 with a thickness of 20 μm or less formed of a material having an electro-optical effect, an optical waveguide 2 formed on a front surface or a rear surface of the thin plate, and a modulation electrode modulating light passing through the optical waveguide. The optical waveguide includes an input optical waveguide 21, branched optical waveguides 23 to 28, and an output optical waveguide 30. The branched optical waveguide includes an input branching portion (region B) in which the input optical waveguide is branched into a plurality of optical waveguides, an output merging portion (region D) in which the plurality of optical waveguides connected to the output optical waveguide are merged, and a parallel portion (region C) formed between the input branching portion and the output merging portion. At least one of the input branching portion and the output merging portion has a ratio l/d of a length l along a symmetry axis of the branched optical waveguides to a gap d of the optical waveguide in the parallel portion in the range of 33 to 100.
