摘要： Apparatus for binding a book with a helical plastic coil includes a forming mandrel for forming helical coils from a heated elongate plastics material with the coils being cooled on the mandrel and cut to length before being discharged onto an accumulator tray. The coils are individually transported at high speed from a discharge edge of the tray to the insertion device where the coils are inserted into aligned holes at an edge of respective collated books for binding the books. The coils on the tray are heated by a contact heater on the surface of the tray and/or by air blown over the tray to be kept at a temperature above 25 degrees C. to improve crimping of the ends after cutting of the coil to length in the book.

摘要： A helical plastic coil is used for binding a collated book having a stack of pages with aligned holes along one edge of the book where a leading end of the filament is fed into a first hole at a first end of the book and the coil is rotated about its axis such that the leading end is threaded through the holes by entering each of the holes until the coil is threaded through all of the holes. The leading end of the coil is sheared by an anvil and blade so as to define a leading apex and a leading surface inclined rearwardly from the leading apex along the filament and across the filament. The leading apex is arranged such that, as the leading end enters each of the holes in turn, the leading apex is located on the leading end of the filament at a position thereon facing away from the trailing end of the coil and spaced from the end of the hole facing the first end of the book.

The device has a box-shaped backpan connected to a ceiling air duct and a flow directing assembly attached to the backpan and hanging below the ceiling. The flow directing component has a perforated face panel made up of flat surfaces in horizontal and angular planes, forming a substantially semi-cylindrical shape. Inside the face panel are four vanes that span its length, for controlling the direction of air flow. The flow directing assembly can swing away from the ceiling by a hinge along one side, or can be removed entirely using quick release means.

摘要： A machine for inserting plastic pre-formed helical coils into aligned holes at an edge of respective collated books for binding the books is adjustable to accommodate different thickness books and respective different diameter and pitch of coil. The machine has a platen having an edge comb at which the edge of the book is presented and a coil drive for rotating the helical coil parallel to the edge of the platen. Two spine formers support the book such that its spine takes up a curved shape in side elevation and a clamp with an edge comb clamps the book on to the platen. Both the edge comb of the platen and of the clamp are provided as insert portions attachable to the respective element for easy replacement of the pitch. The location of the coil drive is automatically adjusted by measuring the coil diameter with a gauge. The clamp moves along an arc which automatically adjusts the clamping location for thickness of the book.
