The mobile station maintains a list of base stations that the mobile station is in communication with, referred to as an “Active Set”. In addition, the mobile station maintains another list of base stations that are proximate to the base stations in the active set. This list is referred to as the “Neighbor Set”. A memory within the mobile station includes information that would allow the mobile station to demodulate information transmitted from those base stations on the neighbor set. In accordance with the disclosed method and apparatus, the mobile station places a base station in the active set upon including the base station in a pilot strength measurement message (PSMM). The mobile station monitors transmissions from all of the base stations on the active set to receive a handoff direction message (HDM).

    摘要: In one disclosed embodiment, communication between a mobile unit and a base station is performed at a data transfer rate selected from, for example, a finite set of HDR data transfer rates. Meanwhile, the mobile unit continually computes a moving average of the data transfer rates. The mobile unit also ascertains a supportable data rate for receiving data. The supportable data rate can be selected from a finite set of HDR data transfer rates. In order to maintain the moving average of the data transfer rate within a specified range, the mobile unit transmits maximum data rate requests or null data requests to the base station. The maximum data rates requested by the mobile unit are equal to or lower than the supportable data rate.

    摘要: Access terminal identification management providing a minimum distance between subnets before reusing subnet identifiers. Mobility criteria evaluation determines when to reassign an access terminal identifier. In one embodiment, the mobility criteria is whether any member of the active set for the access terminal belongs to an originating subnet. In an alternate embodiment, the criteria is whether the access terminal has traveled more than a minimum distance from the originating subnet. When a mobility criteria is violated, the access network assigns a new identifier. In one embodiment, the access terminal identifier is a long code mask based on a subnet identifier. Identifier management applies when crossing sector boundaries in a cellular system, and serves to reduce the ambiguity of mapping CC values to full UATI values, and to avoid overlapping assignments.

    摘要: A method of supervising on the forward link in a high data rate system is disclosed, wherein a base station transmits to an access terminal on a forward traffic channel only when the base station has data to send to the access terminal. The base station minimizes the worst-case period necessary to reclaim traffic channel resources following a release by periodically transmitting a configuration packet to its access terminals. The configuration packet indicates the allocation status of the traffic channels belonging to the base station. If an access terminal receives a configuration packet indicating the deallocation of one or all of its traffic channels, the access terminal immediately ceases its use of those traffic channels. If an access terminal fails to successfully decode a configuration packet for a predetermined supervision time, the access terminal releases its connection with all base stations and associated traffic channels.
