摘要： A system and method for performing base station initiated call setup is provided. A base station initiated call setup may be utilized to establish a test call, to deliver a packet data services call to a subscriber unit, or to reactivate a dormant packet call. The base station transmits a BS Service Request message to the mobile switching center, requesting initiation of the call. The mobile switching center will authorize the call if the call to be set up is directed to a subscriber unit located within the service area of the base station and if the service option to be used is authorized for the particular subscriber unit. The mobile switching center will allow or disallow the call depending on the state of the subscriber unit. The mobile switching center transmits a BS Service Response message to the base station, conveying the result of processing the BS Service Request message. If the base station initiated call setup is authorized and allowed, the call will generally proceed in the same manner as a subscriber terminated call.

摘要： A conference calling system for a wireless communications channel. The system is adapted for use with a channel having first, second and third participants communicating via first, second and third transmitters and receivers respectively. The system includes a circuit for receiving an encoded signal from at least one of the transmitters. A second circuit determines which of the participants is speaking from the received encoded signal. A third circuit is provided for re-transmitting an encoded signal received from the speaking participant to the other participants. In the illustrative implementation, the encoded signals are variable rate speech vocoded signals in which speech is vocoded at full rate, silence is vocoded at 1/8th rate and the 1/2 and 1/4 rates are used as transitional rates. In the illustrative implementation, the speaker's signal is identified by examining the rate of the received vocoded signals. When the speaker's vocoded signal is identified, it is re-transmitted without de-vocoding to the non-speaking participants in the conference call. By re-transmitting the speaker's signal without de-vocoding, the quality of the received signal is preserved.

摘要： A wireless modem which enables user programming of radiotelephone features such as call waiting, MIN selection, and the like, without requiring a keypad interface. The wireless modem is comprised of decoder logic that determines if commands are present in a data stream from a computer. If commands are present, the decoder instructs a multiplexer to switch the modem commands to the modem subsystem and the radiotelephone feature commands to the radiotelephone subsystem. Each subsystem is comprised of a register that stores the command. The control logic in each subsystem then reads the command and acts upon it accordingly.

Using a standard telephone system, the connection for a voice service and a data service is the same. With the introduction of the digital wireless link, the voice connection and the data connection are different. Therefore new dialing commands which indicate the intent of the connection are created. These commands can also be used to designate the intent of the call from a mobile unit capable of data and voice service but not capable of simultaneous voice and data service. They can also be used to invoke simultaneous voice and data services.

摘要： In one disclosed embodiment, communication between a mobile unit and a base station is performed at a data transfer rate selected from, for example, a finite set of HDR data transfer rates. Meanwhile, the mobile unit continually computes a moving average of the data transfer rates. The mobile unit also ascertains a supportable data rate for receiving data. The supportable data rate can be selected from a finite set of HDR data transfer rates. In order to maintain the moving average of the data transfer rate within a specified range, the mobile unit transmits maximum data rate requests or null data requests to the base station. The maximum data rates requested by the mobile unit are equal to or lower than the supportable data rate.

摘要： A communication system that allows a soft handoff to be completed, even when the communications link between the active base station and the mobile station deteriorates before the mobile station has received the handoff direction message. The mobile station maintains a list of base stations that the mobile station is in communication with, referred to as an “Active Set”. In addition, the mobile station maintains another list of base stations that are proximate to the base stations in the active set. This list is referred to as the “Neighbor Set”. A memory within the mobile station includes information that would allow the mobile station to demodulate information transmitted from those base stations on the neighbor set. In accordance with the disclosed method and apparatus, the mobile station places a base station in the active set upon including the base station in a pilot strength measurement message (PSMM). The mobile station monitors transmissions from all of the base stations on the active set to receive a handoff direction message (HDM).
