By forming a viewing path inclined forward against or toward with respect to a vertical plane the image sensor so as to permit the reading portion to be observed easily, the desired image light reflected from the reading portion is little interfered with external light entering inside the scanner through the viewing path, thereby to obtain image processing of high quality.

The substrate and the first guide plate are provided with guide grooves fitted into protrusions formed in the plurality of diaphragm blades to guide the blades. Guide grooves of the substrate are formed of concave grooves. Guide grooves of the first guide plate are formed of through holes. The through holes of the first guide plate have a narrower width than the concave grooves of the substrate to engage in the protrusions of the diaphragm blades and to guide the diaphragm blades in the open and close direction.

The light quantity adjusting device includes a substrate having an optical path aperture, a blade movably placed on the substrate to restrict the quantity of light passing through the optical path aperture, and an electromagnetic driving device for drivingly opening and closing the blade. The electromagnetic driving device includes a rotating shaft, an arm integrated with the rotating shaft, and a transmission pin provided on the arm. The blade has a cam groove formed therein and engaging the transmission pin. The cam groove includes a continuous groove having a driving area that crosses a pivoting direction of the transmission pin at a predetermined angle to displace the blade and a non-driving area that crosses the pivoting direction of the transmission pin at a substantially right angle to reduce displacement applied to the blade.
