Disclosed is a practicable, image display device comprising a color-changing array 2 of a plurality of light-shielding layers 21 and a plurality of color-changing layers 22, of which at least one is a fluorescent layer, as disposed in series on a light-transmissive substrate 1 with being laterally spaced, and an array of a plurality of light-emitting layers 3 as laterally spaced to be in the position corresponding to each color-changing layer 22 in such a manner that the color-changing layers 22 receive emitted light from the light-emitting layers 3 to change it into different colors. The device is characterized in that the surface of the color-changing array 2 that faces the array of light-emitting layers 3 is planarized to thereby reduce its surface roughness to 2.0 .mu.m or lower. The images formed by the device have high visibility with little color mixing and color spread. The producibility of the device is high.

A three-dimensional display is provided with a display device alternatively displaying an image for the right eye and an image for the left eye in division of the images at predetermined time periods. A liquid crystal shutter disposed in front of the display device is operated in synchronization with image switching of the display device, and the image transmitted through the liquid crystal shutter is observed as a three-dimensional image through polarized glasses of which polarizing directions differ in the right and left from each other. The liquid crystal cell which serves as a liquid crystal shutter has a structure of a ferroelectric liquid crystal held between two sheets of resin film substrates and the ferroelectric liquid crystal contains more than 10 wt % of ferroelectric liquid crystal polymer so that it can respond to a large size display device and a high speed motion. A retardation plate to compensate elliptical polarization of the polarized glasses prevents lowering of contrast of the display due to the elliptical polarization peculiar to the operation mode of the liquid crystal cell and reduces a double reflection of the image, by setting the condition of |&Dgr;n1d1−&Dgr;n2d2|≦50 nm in the range of light wavelength from 400 nm through 900 nm, for the retardation (&Dgr;n1d1) of the retardation plate and a retardation (&Dgr;n2d2) of a liquid crystal cell forming the liquid crystal shutter.
