Abstract: A gas sensor includes an element body, an adjustment pump cell, a preliminary pump cell, a measurement electrode, a reference electrode, a specific gas concentration detection device. The element body provides a measurement-object gas flow section to allow a measurement-object gas to be introduced into and flow through the measurement-object gas flow section. The adjustment pump cell adjusts an oxygen concentration of an oxygen concentration adjustment chamber in the measurement-object gas flow section. The preliminary pump cell pumps oxygen into a preliminary chamber to prevent the measurement-object gas in a low-oxygen atmosphere from reaching the oxygen concentration adjustment chamber, the preliminary chamber being provided upstream of the oxygen concentration adjustment chamber in the measurement-object gas flow section. The measurement electrode is disposed on an inner peripheral surface of a measurement chamber provided downstream of the oxygen concentration adjustment chamber in the measurement-object gas flow section.

Abstract: In a method of performing active control between a lean operation state and a rich operation state on a vehicle engine including a three way catalyst in an exhaust path, on a downstream side with respect to the three way catalyst in the exhaust path, a limited current type NOx sensor having NH3 interference and also capable of detecting a change in an oxygen concentration on the downstream side is disposed, and an operation state of the vehicle engine is switched between a lean operation state and a rich operation state at a timing when a detection of a change in an oxygen concentration in an exhaust air flowing out from the three way catalyst or a detection of NOx or NH3 is performed first by the NOx sensor.

Abstract: A method for diagnosing the degree of deterioration of a catalyst disposed in an exhaust path of an internal combustion engine and oxidizes or adsorbs a target gas, including at least one of a hydrocarbon gas and a carbon monoxide gas in an exhaust gas from the internal combustion engine, is adapted to determine whether deterioration exceeding an acceptable level of a catalyst occurs or not by comparing the concentration of a target gas detected downstream from the catalyst in the exhaust path when a diagnosis-gas atmosphere containing a target gas higher in concentration than a target gas during a steady-operation state of the internal combustion engine is intentionally produced and introduced into the catalyst with a threshold value corresponding to the temperature of a catalyst at the timing which the diagnosis-gas atmosphere is introduced.

Abstract: Provided is a gas sensor capable of accurately obtaining a hydrocarbon gas concentration even if a measurement gas contains water vapor. A main pumping cell adjusts an oxygen partial pressure of a first internal space such that a hydrocarbon gas in a measurement gas is not substantially burned in the first internal space. An auxiliary pumping cell adjusts an oxygen partial pressure of a second internal space such that inflammable gas components except for hydrocarbon are selectively burned. Then, the measurement gas is introduced into a third internal space through a third diffusion control part. With oxygen concentration equilibrium kept in the third internal space, hydrocarbon existing in the measurement gas that has reached the third internal space is all burned. Then, the concentration of the hydrocarbon gas component existing in the measurement gas is identified based on the magnitude of a current flowing between the measuring electrode and the main pumping electrode at that time.

Abstract: A catalyst deterioration diagnosis system includes an air-fuel ratio detection element and a NOx detection element on a downstream side with respect to a catalyst, and a control element. The control element causes an engine to perform diagnosis operation performed with an exhaust gas temperature being kept at 600° C. or higher, such that at a timing when a downstream air-fuel ratio in a lean operation state reaches a threshold value, the engine is transitioned to a rich operation state, and at a timing that is a predetermined period after a downstream air-fuel ratio in a rich operation state reaches a threshold value, the engine is transitioned to a lean operation state. The diagnosis element compares NOx concentration during the rich operation state to a diagnosis threshold value, thereby to diagnose a degree of deterioration of NOx reduction capability of the catalyst.

Abstract: Provided is a method of suitably judging necessity of a recovering process carried out on a mixed-potential gas sensor based on an extent of reversible deterioration occurring in a sensing electrode. The method includes the steps of: (a) performing impedance measurement between a sensing electrode exposed to a measurement gas and a reference electrode exposed to a reference atmosphere, which are provided in the gas sensor; and (b) judging necessity of a recovering process based on electrode reaction resistance or a diagnosis parameter correlating with the electrode reaction resistance wherein the electrode reaction resistance and the diagnosis parameter are obtained based on a result of the impedance measurement. The two steps are intermittently or periodically repeated during use of the gas sensor, and it is judged that a recovering process is necessary when the judge parameter satisfies a predetermined threshold condition in the step (b).

Abstract: Provided is a method for recovering output of a gas sensor in shorter time. The method includes: determining a recovering temperature T1 and a recovering time Δτ1 based on a condition setting range where a high recovery rate is expected; and recovering the output based on T1 and Δτ1, wherein in the recovering, a duty ratio for a heater is instantly increased to value D1 higher than a value in a normal driving mode when the recovering starts, D1 is maintained up to T1, and PID control is performed by reducing the duty ratio to value D2 to maintain T1. After an elapse of Δτ1, the duty ratio is reduced to value D3. When the temperature of the element reaches a value 1 to 1.2 times as high as the temperature in the normal drive mode, the duty ratio is instantly changed to value D0 in the normal drive mode.
