An automatic focusing device having a light projecting device, a light receiving device arranged to detect a reflection light quantity reflected by an object to be photographed as a result of light projection by the light projecting device and a distance measuring device arranged to measure a distance to the object by the reflection light quantity received by the light receiving device is capable of adequately performing a focusing operation even in cases where the reflection light quantity is at a level too low for the distance measuring device to give any result of distance measurement. This advantage is attained by the following arrangement: (i) the automatic focusing device is provided with a current control device which is arranged to increase the power of a light flux to be emitted from the light projecting device; (ii) a lens driving operation is brought to a stop in the event of an object of a low reflection factor; (iii) the light quantity accumulating time of the light receiving means can be lengthened; or (iv) a comparison level can be lowered.

The present invention relates to an optical instrument such as an optical axis deflecting device or an image stabilizing device having an optical member supported for rotation about a predetermined axis and rotated about the predetermined axis to thereby deflect the optical axis of passing light, moving means adapted to move in a direction along a plane inclined by a predetermined angle from a plane perpendicular to the predetermined axis to thereby rotate the optical member about the predetermined axis, and driving means for driving the moving means. With such construction, a driving force generated by the driving means acts on that portion of the optical member which is far from the rotational shaft thereof and as a result, a driving torque for driving the optical member can be enhanced without causing the bulkiness and higher cost of the device and an increase in consumed electric power.

This system has a signal processing means supplied with a video signal from image pick-up means to output a signal related to the in-focus state, a detection means for detecting the position of a focusing lens for forming an image in the image pick-up means, when the signal output from the signal processing means is processed, and a calculating means for calculating the presupposed in-focus position of the focusing lens from at least two groups of items of data on the signal outputted from the signal processing means and on the position of the focusing lens supplied from the detection means.
