摘要:
A system comprising radio devices (10a, 10b), and methods of configuring radio links between said devices, is described. The devices are physically attachable/detachable from a host apparatus (12a, 12b). The device provides a host apparatus with a radio link (20) to another host apparatus also containing an appropriately configured device. To configure the links, a consumer merely brings the devices into close proximity for a few seconds. Proximity detection means (38) in the devices detect said proximity and begin an automatic registration process to a configure a link therebetween. Links may be cancelled by repeating the process. Hence a consumer friendly, flexible radio configuration scheme is provided enabling simple configuration of one-to-one or one-to-many links, with the e-buttons offering a physical reminder to the user of which apparatus has wireless capability.

An object positioning system (100) for tracking the location of an object (142) comprises a base station (120) including a computer (124) coupled to at least a first receiver (122). The object (142) is fitted with a tag (140) having a limited signal transmission range, which is typically too weak to be directly received by the first receiver (122). A user (180) wears a portable transceiver (160), which activates the base station (120) by means of an object-related signal when within reception range of the signal transmitted by the tag (140). The computer (124) determines the location of the portable transceiver (160) worn by the user (180), and associates this position with the position of the object (142). As soon as the user (180) moves outside the signal transmission range of the tag (140), the object-related signal is terminated and the last known position of the portable transceiver (160) is used as the new location of the object (142).

An interactive system in which information read from two or more tags (10, 12 or 10, 12′) jointly determines a process to be carried out. One of the tags may identify a user by for example his/her store loyalty card number or by a personal identifying tag (or card) in a cordless RF terminal and the other of the tags may be a RF-ID tag storing details of an action to be performed such as the number of credit points to be given to the loyalty card in response to a transaction or provide promotional information to the user. The process may comprise issuing a command to an action server (28, 30) to provide, or instruct the sending of, output information to a user, by for example over a radio link to a cellular telephone apparatus (18, 34, 36) or PDA, or displayed to the user on a video display unit (38).
