    Abstract: A process for forming agglomerates of metallurgical dust containing metal sulphates for recycling to extractive processes includes adding lime particles and a small amount of water, forming a mixture and extruding the damp mixture and allowing the extruded agglomerates to become hard and shape retentive. The material agglomerated may be water soluble metal sulphate containing particles or mixtures of such particles with other value metal bearing waste or by-products of metallurgical processes. Optionally additional binding agents comprising cement and hydrocarbonaceous substances such as wax may be added to the mixture.

    Abstract: A process for agglomerating by extrusion, metallurgical by-products and waste products having small particle size, is described. A blend of metallurgical by-products, some of which contain silicates previously treated at high temperatures and thereby being capable of chemically and structurally binding water, optionally mixed with portland cement and/or slag cement, and containing water which has been added in amounts that the silicates and cement present can completely absorb and react with, is further mixed with a hydrocarbonaceous substance. The resulting mixture is subsequently agglomerated by extrusion. The extrudates obtained are shape retaining and sufficiently hard to be handled without breaking, crumbling or dusting, and may be charged to extractive pyrometallurgical installations for recovering value metals contained in the metallurgical by-products and waste products. The extrudates may also be stored without dusting and loss of hardness.

    Abstract: An agglomeration process for metallurgical by-products and waste products is described, utilizing the sulphate material present in the metallurgical waste and by-products, which involves reacting the sulphate with water and optionally with an added alkaline earth metal compound. Sulphuric acid may also be added to the particles to be agglomerated. The obtained mixture is extruded or cast, and allowed to harden before being used in recycling to an extractive process. The agglomeration mechanism involves one or more of, hydration of a water soluble sulphate, precipitation of a water insoluble alkaline earth metal sulphate and hydration of a water insoluble sulphate.

    Abstract: A process and apparatus are described for agglomerating metal-containing fine sized particles of metallurgical waste materials continuously by means of a combustible agglomerating agent. The process and apparatus may be adapted to dust and fine particles of different origins and having any particular particle size range and bulk specific gravity. The agglomerates are obtained by feeding the dust or fine sized particles and a combustible agglomerating agent to a continuous mixer, then to a heated rotatable kiln. The agglomerates are subsequently allowed to fall onto one or more conveyor belts, arranged in sequence. The agglomerates on the conveyor belts may be cooled, either by water or compressed air jets impinging upon them, or by cooling the belt surfaces on which the agglomerates are carried. The agglomerating agent may be a low melting point hydrocarbon such as wax, tar, pitch, or the hydrocarbon may be emulsified with water to form an emulsion and then mixed with the particles.The agglomerates may also be extruded after mixing, by having conventional extruding means incorporated in the apparatus.

    Abstract: A process is described for the agglomeration of fine particles utilizing a combustible agglomerating agent dispersed in an aqueous emulsion. The process is particularly directed to the handling of fine metal containing particles, originating as by-products or waste products of metallurgical processes, which are to be stored or recycled to metal extractive process steps. The amount of agglomerant added as aqueous emulsion to the particles, is calculated by correlating in an empirical formula the bulk density and the average particle size of the particles, with the emulsified combustible agglomerating agent to be added expressed as weight percent of the particles. The calculated amount of combustible agglomerating agent is emulsified in water, then mixed and blended with the particles, which usually comprise particles of non-uniform size distribution. The aqueous emulsion may also be formed in-situ on the surface of the particles, and the mixture is then blended to form agglomerates. The mixture which is advantageously at a temperature above the ambient, is allowed to cool and be compacted by its own weight. The dust free agglomerates obtained may be stored or charged directly to smelting or refining process steps.

    Abstract: Apparatus for sequential cyclic operation of a plurality of magnetic tape playing devices. A single side of each tape in each device is played one after the other until all the devices have been operated. Then the other side of the tape is sequentially played. The operation of the device is controlled by logic circuitry responsive to an end-of-tape sensor to operate the next device, switch the tape drive mechanism of the device just operated to play the other side of the tape when activated, and finally to switch off the previously played device.
