Some embodiments provide a content recommendation system (“CRS”) configured to recommend content items that are related to a collection of entities. A content item may be considered related to a collection of entities based on various factors, including whether and how often the article references or otherwise covers the entities of the collection, the size of the article, other entities that are covered by the article but that are not in the collection, article recency, or article credibility. Recommending content items may also or instead include determining entities that are related to a collection. An entity can be considered related to a collection based on various factors, such as whether the entity is of the same or similar type to entities of the collection, or whether the entity appears in some article in a relationship with one or more entities of the collection.

A method and system for authenticating users while conducting an auction via a computer system. The system can automatically authenticate users who have previously registered with the auction system and who have enabled automatic authentication. When a user is registered, the system may store authentication information in a cookie on the user's computer. When the user decides to perform a transaction (e.g., list item auction or place a bid for an item) that requires authentication, the system retrieves the stored authentication information. If automatic authentication is enabled, then the system allows the transaction to proceed without manual authentication. If, however, automatic authentication is not enabled or the system does not recognize the stored authentication information, then the system requests manual authentication. The use of automatic authentication allows a user to enter information relating to a transaction without manually entering any identification information.

A user wishing to sell a product can browse to an existing description of the product in an electronic catalog and then select an option to create a corresponding listing. The pending listings for a product are preferably displayed or summarized on the product's detail page in the catalog. When no such listings exist, an option to preorder the product from an unspecified seller may be provided, and information regarding the resulting preorders may be displayed on the associated product detail pages to entice potential sellers. In one embodiment, the electronic catalog also serves as a retail sales catalog of a merchant.
