摘要: A method for driving a display panel with which the dark contrast can be improved is provided. Each of at least two successive sub-fields including a leading sub-field includes a selective write addressing step for setting the discharge cells to a lighted discharge cell mode by selectively causing a writing discharge in the discharge cells in accordance with the video signal. The sub-fields following at least two sub-fields include a selective erasure addressing step for setting the discharge cells to an unlighted discharge cell mode by selectively causing an erasing discharge in the discharge cells in accordance with the video signal and an emission sustain step for repeatedly causing a sustain discharge corresponding to a weighting of that sub-field only in the discharge cells that are in the lighted discharge cell mode. The last sub-field of each field includes a first erasing step for inducing a first erasing discharge between the column electrode and one of the row electrodes of the row electrode pair belonging to the discharge cells that have been set to the unlighted discharge cell mode in the selective erasure addressing step and a second erasing step for inducing a second erasing discharge between the row electrodes of the row electrode pair belonging to the discharge cells that have been set to the lighted discharge cell mode in the selective write addressing step, the first erasing step and the second erasing step being performed immediately after the emission sustain step.

摘要: A method for driving a plasma display panel is deviced to produce a high-quality image with an increased number of gradations. In each subfield, first and second picture element data write processes are executed for writing picture element data in each discharge cell belonging to first and second display areas of the plasma display panel. In addition, first and second light emission sustaining processes are executed for emitting discharge cells in the light emitting state out of the discharge cells belonging to the first and second display areas. In this process, in subfields with less weight among the subfields, the first light emission sustaining process is executed immediately after the completion of the first picture element data write process, the second picture element data write process is executed immediately after the completion of the first light emission sustaining process, and the second light emission sustaining process is executed immediately after the completion of the second picture element data write process.

摘要: A driving apparatus of a plasma display panel performs allows image display in a desired way. When discharge cells are driven to repetitively execute a sustain-discharge by the application of sustaining pulses to row electrodes the number of times corresponding to subfields, a ratio of changes of a voltage value in a trailing interval of the last sustaining pulse among those sustaining pulses is set to be milder than that of a voltage value in a trailing interval of the sustaining pulse which is applied just before the last sustaining pulse. Further, description has been made for a driving method of a plasma display panel which can perform an image display of high quality by performing a proper selective discharge while preventing an erroneous discharge of the discharge cells in a pixel data writing step. A trailing edge portion of the sustaining pulse which is applied finally among the sustaining pulses applied in a light emission sustaining step has an undershoot part below a ground potential.

摘要: A driving apparatus for a display panel capable of reducing a circuit scale while suppressing the drop of a contrast includes a scan driver having a first power source for generating a first voltage, generating a scan pulse for bringing the capacitive light emission device to either one of an ON state and an OFF state based on the first voltage, and applying the scan pulse to the row electrode, a sustain driver having a second power source for generating a second voltage, generating a sustain pulse for allowing the capacitive light emission device set to the ON state to emit light based on the second voltage, and applying the scan pulse to the row electrode, and a reset driver generating a reset pulse for initializing the state of the capacitive light emission device based on the sum of the first voltage generated by the first power source and the second voltage generated by the second power source, and applying the reset pulse to the row electrode. This circuit construction can eliminate the necessity of a dedicated power source for generating the reset pulse. In another aspect of the invention, a reset pulse having a waveform having a sharp level shift at a front edge thereof and a gentle level shift at a portion succeeding the front edge is generated based on a voltage generated by connecting in series a power source for generating a sustain discharge pulse and a power source for generating a scan pulse. This circuit construction can eliminate the necessity for a dedicated power source for generating the reset pulse and can lower light emission brightness resulting from reset discharge induced in accordance with the reset pulse.
