摘要： An object-driven application tool allows a Value Added Reseller (VAR) to access a large body of publicly available information about computing devices and to identify the needs of a particular customer or end user and to select an appropriate solution of equipment, hardware, and networking products to meet the customer's needs. Moreover, the tool includes capabilities allowing a VAR to demonstrate to the end user the appropriateness of the solution, for allowing information entry in high level, abstract business-oriented vocabulary rather than a highly technical low level jargon (thus facilitating data entry of information obtained from the end user) and allowing the tool to recognize whether, for example, a slight increase in memory capacity beyond the express needs of the end user may allow a dramatic reduction in requirements for processor speed or non-volatile data storage. The latter tools allow the exemplary embodiment of the present invention to suggest superior solutions over and beyond the express needs of the end user. Selection of a particular solution is generally decoupled from the needs of the end user, which are stored in a separate database; thereafter, as new equipment to obtain on-line information relating to new products and services. Information in the database also includes retrofit information, so that new products can be installed into existing networks.

摘要： A manageable desktop computer system and an associated method for managing a plurality of manageable devices. The computer system includes a storage facility, a registry and a plurality of manageable devices coupled to a hardware component interface (HCI). The HCI includes a dynamic linked library (DLL) which contains a first data structure which describes available management information for each one of the plurality of manageable devices and a function calls area which contains locational information as to where, within the storage facility, the registry or the plurality of manageable devices, the available management information is maintained. A management application which manages the plurality of manageable devices using management information received from the computer system transmits information requests to a management agent which includes a mapper which translates information requests issued by the management application and described using a second data structure into information requests described using the first data structure. The DLL receives the translated requests for information and, using the first data structure and the locational information, retrieves the requested information from either the registry, the storage facility or the manageable device to which the requested information pertains. The retrieved information is then propagated to the mapper for translation into the second data structure and transmission to the management application.

摘要： A remote flash ROM and security package is formed and delivered to a system ROM of a target computer system for remote flashing of the ROM and remote configuration of security settings for the computer system. The remote flash ROM and security package includes flash ROM and security control code for calling a remote flash and security driver to execute a remote flash or to remotely configure a security setting, a file containing a “signed” ROM image to be flashed to the ROM, a security settings file which preferably is encrypted, and a remote flash and security control container for containing the flash ROM and security code, the ROM image, and the security settings file. The remote flash and security driver may be included in the remote flash ROM and security package or may be resident to the target computer system. In the preferred embodiment, the computer system includes a secure memory device containing an administrator password for locking and unlocking the ROM. The remote flash ROM and security package preferably includes an administrator password matching the administrator password stored in the secure memory device to place the computer system in an administrator mode. A system ROM thereby may be flashed or a security setting changed remotely without the need for a user to enter an administrator password. Further, flashing the ROM or changing a security setting occurs as an “inband” process. Flashing a ROM or changing a security setting by remotely providing an administrator password to a secure memory device eliminates the need to reboot a computer system after downloading the ROM and security package.

摘要： A dedicated network expansion unit includes a processor and a dedicated hard disk drive, and has two bays which each can receive one of a further hard disk drive, a floppy disk drive, a CD-ROM drive, and a tape drive. The unit has no manual input mechanism, and no display for text or graphics. The unit can be connected to one or more communications link through Ethernet connectors, a PCMCIA modem card, a PCMCIA token ring card, or a parallel connector. Following power-up or a reset, the unit automatically detects the types of devices present and the types of communications link connected to it, and automatically configures its software to operate properly with these devices and links, without user interaction. Special software routines are provided for the unit and a remote computer to permit a conventional backup program in the remote computer to effect a backup operation within the expansion unit using ASPI commands. A further program effects a software interface between at least two communications link and a conventional network driver program designed to communicate with a single network.
