A method in a mobile radiotelephone system in which an address is added to a symbol message in a control channel in order to exclude interfering connections operating on the same radio frequency as the actual connection between a base station and a mobile station. According to the proposed method, the address (A1) to the intended receiver is added to the message (M) and an error check word (E) is calculated based on both the address (A1) and the message (M). Before transmitting to the receiver, the added address is removed and the transmitted control signal includes only the symbol message (M) and the error check code (E). In the receiver, the specific address for the receiver is added to the received control signal and the same calculation is carried out as in the transmitter in order to get an accept/reject signal.

A method and apparatus is presented for transforming a key variable used for scrambling cellular data traffic between a terminal and a network in alternate ways using information transmitted to the terminal from the network with which the terminal is connected. Transformation is accomplished by passing portions of the key variable through a series of S-boxes which provide a mapping between the input and output. Moreover, it is disclosed how to save memory by iteratively passing portions of the key variable through the same S-box.

A method for determining the position of a mobile radio telephone in a satellite communication system is disclosed. First, a mobile radio telephone scans a plurality of paging channels and measures the signal strength of the paging channels. The mobile radio telephone then selects the paging channel with the strongest signal strength and decodes the information broadcasted on the selected channel. The information contained in the paging channel can include frequencies or timeslots of paging channels in surrounding spot beams. The mobile station then measures the signal strength of paging channels in surrounding spot beams and quantizes the measurements to determine a coarse position of the mobile radio telephone.

A decoding system discriminates between different types of communications traffic signals. Each type of traffic signal is encoded using a different error correction code. Plural, parallel decoders each decode a received traffic signal using a different decoding technique. Each decoding technique operates in accordance with one of the error correction codes. A quantitative measurement of the reliability of a decoded result is generated by each decoder. A comparison processor accumulates the quantitative measurements made by each decoder and compares the accumulated values. That decoder having the most reliable, accumulated value is selected to decode the current traffic signals. The remaining decoders are deactivated to conserve processing time.

The invention relates to a cellular digital mobile radio system including base stations (Bm, Bn) and mobile stations (MS1, MS2) with transmitters and receivers. The invention also relates to a method of transmitting message information digitally between mobile and base stations in such a system. In accordance with the invention, at least two base station transmitters (Bma, Bmb, Pna, Bnb) at a given transmitting distance from each other are assigned to each of certain cells (Cm, Cn) within a restricted geographical area. The base station transmitters which are assigned to the same cell transmit digitally modulated radio signals within the same frequency range at least partially simultaneously to the mobile stations of the cell. The radio signals from different base station transmitters associated with the same cell are digitally modulated with the same message information to the mobile stations in the cell. Different base station transmitters (9A, 9B) preferably transmit the digitally modulated radio signals with the same message information to a given mobile station with a given mutual transmission time shift. Here, the transmission time shift is selected individually for each mobile station, such that corresponding digitally modulated radio signals with the same message information to a given mobile station from different base station transmitters arrive practically simultaneously at the mobile station.

Emergency call handling may, in the near future, require terminal unit location information to be provided to emergency service centers. Independent or quasi-independent systems, sometimes referred to as adjunct systems, can be provided to monitor remote unit transmissions and derive location information for mobile units making emergency access therefrom. Techniques for determining which channels each adjunct receive shall monitor are described herein, as well as specific monitoring techniques. Moreover, the adjunct system can use the received information to provide a second speech path to an emergency service center.

The invention relates to a method in mobile radio systems in which the responsibility for transmitting message information to a mobile station is handed over from a first base station transmitter to a second base station transmitter. In this method, the same radio channel is used, if possible, before and after the handover for transmitting message information to the mobile station. If the same radio channel can be utilized, the handover takes place without the mobile station being informed beforehand of the handover by a special signal or order or the like. In digital mobile ratio systems with digital transmission of message information by digital modulation of the radio signals, the transmission is preferably started from a second base station transmitter before the transmission is terminated from a first base station transmitter. During a certain transmission time substantially the same message information is transmitted to the mobile station from both the first and second base station transmitters.
