The present invention relates generally to a nuclear magnetic resonance apparatus and method for substantially eliminating the effects of phase coherent acoustic ringing in borehole logging. A series of cycles of measurement pulse sequences are applied to the formation surrounding the borehole. Each pulse sequence includes an RF excitation pulse and several RF refocusing pulses. Spin echoes are received that contain spurious ringing signals from the excitation and refocusing pulses. Spin echo signals from corresponding spin echoes of each cycle are combined and substantially cancel the spurious ringing from the excitation and refocusing pulses of the pulse sequences.

A method and an apparatus for obtaining NMR measurements are disclosed. An NMR measurement apparatus, the measured sample, or both elements may be subjected to motion during the measurement. The envelope of an RF carrier signal is modulated according to an envelope to generate a first sequence of RF pulses. The envelope, the phase of the RF signal, and/or a static magnetic field may be varied during the radiation of the first sequence to substantially saturate a first region of the sample. The first sequence may include additional RF refocusing pulses that, when coupled with movement of the NMR measurement apparatus or sample, may also be used to substantially saturate the first region. A second sequence of RF pulses is radiated to establish a resonance region within the first region and measure an attribute of the sample.

The measurement can be made while drilling or using a wireline tool. At least one gradient coil is positioned circumferentially around the tool. A magnetic field is produced by the coil in a region of the formation facing the coil. The magnetic field is substantially parallel to the static magnetic field produced by a pair of permanent magnets which form a part of the tool. The additional field causes an additional phase shift for spins located in the region so that the spins subjected to the additional field do not form a spin-echo.

The tool comprises a drill bit, drill string, a plurality of RF antennas, and at least one gradient coil. The tool further comprises a plurality of magnets that are polarized in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the tool but opposite to each other. The configuration of magnets and antennas provides for at least two NMR regions of investigation.

A magnetic resonance tomography scanner is provided for the determination a diffusion tensor of an examination object, and a method is provided for operating the magnetic resonance tomography scanner. The magnetic resonance tomography scanner acquires a volume image of the examination object by imaging magnetic resonance tomography without diffusion encoding. The control system segments the image according to diffusion-relevant symmetry properties and also determines volume elements of a symmetry group. A first and a second component of a diffusion tensor are acquired by the magnetic resonance tomography scanner at different angles and the control unit uses the symmetry property with the acquired components and the volume image to determine a diffusion tensor for the volume elements.

The transmitter is configured to transmit a pilot tone signal via the antenna. The transmitter also includes a decoupling element in order to protect a transmitter output from signals that the antenna receives with excitation pulses of the magnetic resonance tomography system during a magnetic resonance tomography. In a method, movement-dependent changes to the pilot tone signal of the transmitter are identified by a controller of the magnetic resonance tomography system.
