    Abstract: A method of controlling an aerosol-generating system is provided, the system including: an aerosol-generating article including a taggant having an identifiable spectroscopic signature and being excitable by light to emit a light emission, and an aerosol-generating device configured to engage with, and disengage from, the article, the device including: a light source to illuminate the article engaged with the device, and a light receiver to receive light emitted by the article engaged with device; and the method including: illuminating, by the light source, the article engaged with the device so as to excite the taggant to emit the light emission, ending the illuminating, by the light source, of the article, receiving, by the light receiver, the light emission after the light source ending the illuminating, and analysing the light emission received by the light receiver to determine a characteristic of the article.

    Abstract: A method for charging a rechargeable lithium-ion battery in an aerosol-generating system is provided, the method including: initiating charging of the rechargeable lithium-ion battery; monitoring an electrical parameter indicative of a charging rate of the rechargeable lithium-ion battery; determining the charging rate of the rechargeable lithium-ion battery by monitoring a change of the electrical parameter over a given time period; and comparing the determined charging rate to a reference charging rate, the reference charging rate being defined by an expected change in the monitored electrical parameter; and if the charging rate deviates from the reference charging rate, inhibiting the rechargeable lithium-ion battery from being charged. A charge controller for an aerosol generating system is also provided. An aerosol-generating device is also provided. A charging case for an aerosol generating device is also provided.

    Abstract: An aerosol-generating system is provided, including: an air inlet and outlet; an air flow passage extending between the inlet and outlet; a heating element to heat an aerosol-forming substrate; a sensor assembly in communication with the passage to measure a pressure or flow rate within the passage; and a controller to detect a start of a puff, read the pressure or flow rate, and control a supply of power in a first mode in response to the start of the puff and dependent on both a time since the start of the puff and the pressure or flow rate read by the controller following the start, and the controller includes a look-up table including power values corresponding to a pressure range or flow rate range and a time range since the start, the controller using in the first mode the table to control the supply of power.
