摘要: A synchronous protocol data formatter handles all 24-32 channels of a so-called primary rate version of a digital multiplexed interface or ISDN Primary Rates Interface for a communication system. The formatter relieves the host computer of the local area network of some highly specialized tasks, and, at the same time, provides the following augmented capabilities, which exceed those required by the C.C.I.T.T. standard, I.431:1. dynamic channel bandwidth allocation can assign arbitrary (even non-adjacent) time slots to create a super channel;2. a circular interrupt-queue in a shared memory enables the formatter and the host computer of the local area network to interact efficiently in updating and responding to changing conditions; and3. cyclical redundancy codes can be used on a more flexible basis than theretofore, e.g., can be generated upon only address and control fields for digitized voice signals, or, in a relay mode, can substitute an existing cyclical redundancy code to guard against memory errors.

摘要: In accordance with one aspect of the present invention, the detection of voice signals versus modem signals in a data communication system may be conducted, a determination can be made whether existing VoIP algorithm functions or characteristics may be appropriate for modem communications, and then the VoIP algorithms may be modified to improve operating conditions for a modem connection. Additionally, the existing VoIP algorithm functions and network characteristics within the data communication system that may degrade modem performance can be identified prior to the determination of whether the VoIP algorithm functions are appropriate for modem communications. In accordance with another aspect, the detection between voice signals and modem signals can also comprise the determination as to a particular type of modems signal. Further, control of the adaptive jitter buffer to remove or reduce adaptation during detection of modem signals can be provided.

摘要: A digital subscriber line (DSL) communication system that utilizes the high frequency band of a standard telephone line does not require the use of a plain old telephone service (POTS) splitter in the resident's home, which provided isolation between the POTS frequency band (0 to 4 kHz) and the DSL frequency band. Digital signal processing techniques are utilized to adapt to varying subscriber line conditions due to POTS telephone equipment. The digital signal processing techniques eliminate the need for a splitter by reducing susceptibility to distortion due to varying subscriber line characteristics. The digital subscriber line modem utilizes constant envelope modulated signals and frequency division multiplexing, where the constant envelope modulations lessens the intermodulation distortion products due to DSL signals that are transmitted by the modem and which may result in audible noise at the POTS telephone equipment due to non-linearities of the POTS telephone equipment.

In one example approach, a method is provided in which a voice over internet protocol (VOIP) session is initiated in a first gateway with a second gateway. A plurality of jitter adaptation packets are transmitted from the first gateway to the second gateway. Also, the voice activity detector is disabled in the first gateway during the transmission of the jitter adaptation packets. The voice activity detector is enabled in the first gateway after the transmission of the jitter adaptation packets.

摘要: A intelligent network interface network port (INIP) is provided that enables a visiting computer to be connected to a local area network (LAN), even though the LAN is not configured to support the visiting computer. Upon detecting one of several specific types of messages, the INIP modifies the message, retransmits the modified message and notifies the visiting computer that the INIP is the appropriate target for the message, thus acting as a relay point between the visiting computer and other devices both on the LAN and accessible through it. This enables the visiting computer to transparently connect to a LAN that is not configured to support it.

摘要: A communication system for communication of data packets associated with a packet switched network is disclosed herein. The system includes a port processor, a segmentation and reassembly device, and a host processor. The port processor communicates data packets to and from at least one communication device and at least one destination. The segmentation and reassembly device routes data packets to and from the port processor and the at least one destination. The host processor establishes a virtual circuit between the port processor and the segmentation and reassembly device. The host processor further directs the port processor to communicate data traffic to the segmentation and reassembly device via the virtual circuit, whereby the port processor and segmentation and reassembly device exchange data directly via the virtual circuit without per-packet handling by the host processor of all data traffic.

摘要: An improved data communication technique may be employed with modems through a packet network. The disclosed technique facilitates a virtual end-to-end connection between two modems such that the two modems can effectively behave as if directly connected to each other, unaware of any modifications to the data being transferred or to the protocols configured within the communication connection. Preferably, a data communication system for carrying out the communication technique demodulates data coming from a first modem, transports the demodulated data in packets between two gateways, and then remodulates the data before delivering to a second modem at the other end. In accordance with various aspects of the present invention, various alternatives for calling and quality of service set-up mechanisms, the establishment of a communication session, the transport of data during a communication session, the flow control between all system components involved, and the mechanisms for the termination of communications are also provided.

摘要: A digital subscriber line (DSL) communication system that utilizes the high frequency band of a standard telephone line does not require the use of a plain old telephone service (POTS) splitter in the resident's home, which provided isolation between the POTS frequency band (0 to 4 kHz) and the DSL frequency band. A digital subscriber line modem utilizes either constant envelope modulation or quadrature amplitude modulation for outputting DSL signals upstream to a central office. When a telephone in the resident's home is detected as being off-hook, then the constant envelope modulation is used by the DSL modem in order to lessen the intermodulation product distortion that results in audible noise heard by a user of the telephone. When the telephone is on-hook, then another type of modulation, such as QAM, is used to maximize the upstream data rate capability in the DSL frequency band, since any noise generated by the QAM is not a problem due to the non-use of the POTS frequency band.
