Abstract: A passive optical network (PON) system utilizing a data link layer protocol for communication is disclosed. The PON system may include an optical network unit (ONU). The PON system may also include an optical line terminal (OLT) configured to communicate with the ONU utilizing an Ethernet frame. The Ethernet frame may include at least a source application identifier and a destination application identifier. The source application identifier may represent a source application residing in at least one of the OLT and the ONU. The destination application identifier may represent one or more destination applications configured to receive data from the source application.
