Abstract: An antenna system includes: a ground plane conductor; a substrate; and an array including subarrays each configured to receive energy of a radiating frequency at an input and including: a microstrip signal line electrically coupled to the input and disposed such that the substrate is disposed between the microstrip signal line and the ground plane conductor; microstrip stubs extending from the microstrip signal line and disposed such that the substrate is disposed between the microstrip stubs and the ground plane conductor; and electrically-conductive connectors each connected to a respective one of the microstrip stubs about one-quarter of a wavelength, at the radiating frequency in the substrate, from the microstrip signal line along a length of the respective one of the microstrip stubs and electrically connecting the respective one of the microstrip stubs to the ground plane conductor.

Abstract: An antenna assembly includes an array of patch antennas arranged above a rectangular ground plane. The patch antennas are arranged in a sequence beginning at a first end of the rectangular ground plane and continuing across a width of the rectangular ground plane to a second end. With regard to this sequence, a plurality of polarization feeds alternate between being adjacent a first corner to being adjacent a second corner of the patch antennas and/or a plurality of via walls alternate in orientation along portions of a first edge of the rectangular ground plane and along portions of a second edge of the rectangular ground plane.

Abstract: Radio frequency antenna designs for mobile devices are provided. An example patch antenna element includes an active element comprising a square metallic patch disposed on a first plane, a plurality of metallic patches disposed on a second plane that is above and parallel to the first plane, wherein each of the plurality of metallic patches are separated from one another in the second plane by a gap, and a plurality of via structures disposed between the first plane and the second plane, wherein each of the plurality of via structures is configured to electrically couple a respective one metallic patch of the plurality of metallic patches with the active element.

Abstract: A patch antenna array includes a plurality of high-band patch antennas configured to radiate at frequencies in a relatively higher frequency band; and a plurality of low-band patch antennas configured to radiate at frequencies in a relatively lower frequency band, the low-band patch antennas interleaved with the high-band patch antennas. Each low-band patch antenna includes: an active element; and a passive element comprising a metal ring with an outer edge and an inner edge, the inner edge defining an inner opening. A corresponding patch antenna includes an active rectangular patch element; and a passive element disposed above the active element with a metal ring defining an inner opening, wherein the passive element is disposed above the active element. The passive, metal ring elements can optimize the dual-band performance by controlling interference. Very narrow substrates can be enabled.
