A drive for an electromagnetic counter of electrical impulses includes an electromagnet stator member 2 forming a frame, the side portions 2b of which being provided with bearings 6 which carry a rotor member 1 mounted on a shaft 10 and a braking means for braking the rotor. The bearings 6 are preferably of sintered material which is impregnated with low viscosity oil such that when the field windings 2c are energized the rotor element 1 is magnetically driven in the direction of the arrow (Fig. 2) so that a rotor pole face 3a moves into the tapered air gap 4 from a region of lesser magnetic flux intensity to a region of greater magnetic flux intensity. The radial pressure exerted on the bearings will cause a breakdown of the lubrication film so that a condition of semidry friction causes braking of the rotor element 1. A bending moment is applied to the shaft 1 by the magnetic flux intensity to cause a rotor pole face 3a to be brought into frictional contact with a stator pole face 2a. Another embodiment is disclosed wherein the air gaps 7 between the side faces of the rotor 1 and the side portions 2b are unequal thus resulting in a greater magnetic flux intensity being applied on one side of the rotor to move the rotor axially into frictional contact with the adjacent bearing 6.
