摘要:
A system for scanning a symbol that has a plurality of modes including a learning mode and an adaptive mode. When the scanner is in a learning mode, a plurality of scans are generated using a plurality of sets of operating parameters. A decoder decodes the plurality of scans generated by the scanner. A data collector collects readability data indicating whether the generated scan decodes successfully or unsuccessfully for each of the sets of operating parameters. A processor determines whether the readability data is acceptable for each of the sets of operating parameters. An optimal set of operating parameters is selected from the acceptable sets of operating parameters. The optimal set of operating parameters is stored along with data identifying the symbol so that the optimal set of operating parameters may be recalled for use in scanning symbols of a similar type or in a similar environment.

A symbol scanning system which adaptively changes scanning system parameters including light beam pattern and focus to improve barcode readability. The scanning system including; a scanner, responsive to coordinate control signals, for directing a light beam in a pattern at a symbol at a predetermined location, detecting a reflected portion of the light beam, and generating a feedback signal corresponding to the detected portion of the reflected light beam, a microprocessor, responsive to the feedback signal, for generating pattern control signals, and a pattern generator for generating the coordinate control signals in responsive to the pattern control signals and for determining the light beam pattern.

A point-of-sale unit for electro-optically reading bar code symbols includes a housing having a handle and a curved head. The head and the handle have support surfaces for engaging a work surface to support the housing in various orientations. The handle may be removably mounted behind the curved head.

A reader for electro-optical reading bar code symbols of reduced height, comprises a light source for generating a light beam along an optical path; a pair of oscillatable reflectors in the optical path; a first drive for oscillating the reflectors at different frequencies that are a ratio of about 10%-30% apart to create a scan pattern; and a second drive for rotating the scan pattern about an axis that is generally orthogonal to the scan pattern.

Optical scanning of one and two-dimensional barcode symbols is carried out using a variety of ergonomic scanner embodiments which can each be used either in a hand-held mode or in a fixed-mode. In certain embodiments, hand-held scanners are described which can if required be easily positioned in a number of desired orientations on a work surface. Other embodiments disclose point-of-sale arrangements incorporating removable barcode scanners that can, where necessary, be removed from the point-of-sale unit and used by the checkout operator to scan a large or bulky item in a "point-and-shoot" mode.

A statistical basis for use in a self-scanning checkout system determines how many items to check in a shopper's shopping cart for incorrect or missing scans as well as which particular or types of items to check to determine if they were properly scanned, if the shopper is determined to be audited. The present invention does not audit every customer, but rather determines whether a given shopper or customer is to be audited on a given shopping trip based upon obtaining a minimum checkout loss for such customer. The methodology determines how many items to check for a given shopper as well as which particular items to check for that shopper. The following factors attempt to model the real world of shopping and may be considered, alone or in varying combinations, in determining the number of items to check for a particular shopping transaction: shopper frequency; queue length; prior audit history; store location; time of day, day of week, date of year; number of times items are returned to shelf during shopping; dwell time between scans; customer loyalty; store shopping activity and other factors. Using statistical decision theory for auditing policies a minimum loss per shopper transaction improves the security and reduces the labor of self-check out without being too intrusive to customers.

An optical scanner such as a bar code scanner includes a segmented fold mirror, the individual sections of which have different profiles. By directing the scanning laser beam across the fold mirror, a plurality of scan lines are created, at different distances from the scanner. This provides increased flexibility by extending the scanner's working range. In alternative embodiments, a collector mirror and/or a scanning mirror may be segmented. In addition, beam shaping may be provided by reflecting the beam from one or more aplanar surfaces.

Optical scanning of one- and two-dimensional barcode symbols is carried out first in an aim mode wherein the symbol is scanned using a first scan pattern that is relatively small and dense so as to be visible to the user and thereafter using a second, larger and more robust scan pattern for decoding. During aiming, the symbol is partially decoded to determine type and orientation, and this information is applied to control the angle of the scan pattern produced, the rate at which the scan pattern is increased for optimum decoding, and the ultimate pattern size. Preferred scan patterns, as well as unique scan mechanisms, are described.

Document information is encoded in a graphic symbol applied to the document. The symbol is read to retrieve the document information which is then translated into a humanly discernible form different from that appearing on the document. In one embodiment of the invention, a symbol is applied to sheet music and encoded with the music score printed thereon. The symbol can then be read to produce an audio rendition of the music score. Also, a symbol can be applied to a printed text page and text encoded. The symbol can then be read to produce a vocal reading of the text. Other applications using encoded symbols to uniquely identify or memorialize persons named on credit cards and business cards are disclosed.

A hand-held optical reader for reading printed indicia on a remote target includes a light source for generating a scanning light beam and a detector for detecting the light reflected from the printed indicia. The light source and detector are housed within a housing having a window through which the light beam passes from the source to the target for reflection from the target to the detector. The housing includes parallel front and rear faces, each being generally rectangular in shape and having a lower portion and upper portion. The front and rear faces are joined by a substantially planar base face at their lower edges. The window is disposed in the front face with the reader being ergonomically configured so as be comfortably held in the hand of a user, with the user's palm adjacent the rear face to enable the user to direct the scanning light beam at a remote target.
