A manually operated rotatable carrier is associated with the enclosure and has at least one open pocket therein to receive a recyclable container. A process for recycling containers such as used aluminum beverage cans comprises sensing the presence of an acceptable container inserted into a receiving station in a rotatable carrier and unlatching a latching mechanism to permit the carrier to be rotated if the presence of an acceptable container is sensed. Rotation of the carrier conveys the container to a station where the container is crushed. A receipt is then issued for the crushed container. The process is controlled by a central control unit which may include a computer having a program to monitor and control the process steps.

The recyclable container is inserted into the receiving station where the presence or absence of a container having a metallic sidewall is determined prior to any movement apparent to the user. If the object inserted into the receiving station is determined to be a container having a metallic sidewall, rotation of the carrier for further processing of the recyclable container is permitted. The initial passive screening may include detecting the orientation of the container, detection for the type of metal sidewall, and may also include optical scanning of the container for reading a product code thereon.

A damping spacer having substantially all metallic components thereof made from wrought materials is disclosed. The spacer has a stamped wrought metal frame and a plurality of extruded metal conductor clamp arms which are secured to the frame in a manner that dampens conductor vibrations. Each clamp arm extends outwardly from the frame and is secured to the frame by an extruded metal pivot pin which is affixed to the frame. Each pivot pin has a noncircular cross-sectional shank which extends through a noncircular opening provided in each clamp arm. An elastomer damping collar is inserted on each pivot pin shank so as to also extend through the respective clamp arm opening. The internal and external surfaces of each collar are sized and configured to intimately mate with the noncircular cross-sectional shank of the respective pivot pin and noncircular opening of the respective clamp arm. As such, rotational movement between the pins and the arms caused by conductor vibration is effectively dampened. Extruded metal stop pins also affixed to the frame engage the clamp arms in a manner that prevents the arms from excessive rotational movement about their respective pivot pins. Clamps are also provided for securing each clamp arm to its respective conductor.

A device for placing spring metal clips in locking engagement with the ends of spacing members. One embodiment of the device comprises a center member and two right angle members disposed adjacent the respective ends of the center member and in a manner that places one leg or extension of the right angle members in a generally perpendicular relationship to the longitudinal axis of the center member. Mechanical linking means connect the two right angle members to the center member in a manner that permits relative longitudinal and parallel movement between them. The linking means includes two pivotal handles spaced apart along the length of the center member for effecting relative longitudinal movement of the center and right angle members. A third member is disposed at the end of the leg or extension of each right angle member that is perpendicular to the center member, and configured to engage the base of a clip. Each of the third members is respectively mechanically connected to the right angle members in a manner that permits rotation of the third member relative to the associated right angle member. Means are provided on the right angle and third members to force the legs of the clips (being placed into locking engagement with a spacing member) to close on the spacing member. This insures that the legs will be in position to lock on the spacing member.

A resilient, viscoelastic pad or disc is disposed between the arms in opposed recesses provided in the arms at the location at which the arms are pivotally connected together, the pad or disc providing the primary damping mechanism for the device.
