摘要: A shipping device for a heater unit assembly (23), the heater unit assembly (23) including a cylindrical wall (25) and a top plate (31) secured to the cylindrical wall (25) and having a flange portion which projects radially beyond the outer surface of the cylindrical wall (25), and the shipping device including: a cylindrical container (3) having a closed bottom (13); a support member (47) secured to the container (3) and having an inwardly directed flange for supporting the flange portion of the top plate (31); a supplemental supporting system (1) for positioning the heater unit assembly (23) in the container (3) at a spaced relation from the inner surface and bottom wall (13) of the container (3); a cover (15) for closing the top of the container (3); and a container supporting structure (5,7,8) supporting the container (3) in a manner to permit the container (3) to be moved, relative to the supporting structure (5,7,8 ), between a vertical position for loading and unloading the assembly (23) and a horizontal position for transport of the assembly (23). A seal (57) is interposed between the container (3) and the cover (15) for sealing the interior of the container (3) from the environment. An abutment member (41) is mounted on the container supporting structure (5,7,8) for supporting the container bottom (13), when the container (3) is in the vertical position, to prevent the container (3) from moving past the vertical position in the direction away from the horizontal position, and a retainer member (55) is secured within the cover (15) for retaining the assembly top plate (31) in contact with the support member (47) when the cover (15) closes the top of the container (3).

摘要: A pressure vessel having a removable closure head in a high radiation environment is closed by placing the closure head having a flange over and spaced from the flange of a pressure vessel body containing fissile material. The closure studs are installed in closure stud holes of the pressure vessel body flange. Transition nut members of hydraulic nut assemblies are threaded onto the closure studs. Hydraulic hoses are connected between the hydraulic nut assemblies and a pressure source. The pressure source simultaneously pressurizes the hydraulic nut assemblies to simultaneously apply a uniform force to the closure studs sufficient to seat the spaced apart closure head flange on the pressure vessel body flange and to elongate the closure studs. The hydraulic nut assemblies are locked in place over the closure head flange while the force is applied to the closure studs and the closure studs are elongated. The hydraulic pressure on the hydraulic nut assemblies is released while the hydraulic nut assemblies are locked in place over the closure head flange and the closure studs are elongated. The hydraulic nut assemblies may remain connected with the hydraulic hoses after the pressure vessel has been returned to on-line operations and is generating thermal power. The hydraulic hoses connected with the hydraulic nut assemblies may be vented while generating thermal power in the pressure vessel.

摘要: A shield panel for use in a nuclear reactor including a reactor vessel susceptible to embrittlement when bombarded with high energy neutrons and a nuclear reactor core mounted within the reactor vessel, the reactor vessel having a longitudinal axis and an inner surface surrounding the longitudinal axis, and the nuclear core emitting high energy neutrons which impinge on the inner surface of the reactor vessel. The shield panel includes a canister which contains a completely enclosed interior space and which is mountable between the inner surface of the reactor vessel and the nuclear core in a region wherein the reactor vessel is susceptible to a higher rate of embrittlement than the remaining portion of the vessel when bombarded with high energy neutrons emitted from the nuclear core, and a substance consisting essentially of a heavy metal and hydrogen filling the interior space of the canister.
