A method for combatting weeds by applying to the weeds or their environment, a phenylpyridazine, wherein the phenyl group is substituted by hydroxy, halogen, cyano, nitro, amino, alkyl, alkoxy, cycloalkyl, cycloalkoxy, phenyl, phenoxy, alkylthio or an alkylsulfonyl group and wherein the pyridazinyl ring is substituted in the 4-position by hydroxy or by a --O--C(O)-- derivative.

Amine salts of 3-phenyl-6-halo-4-hydroxypyridazines of the formula: ##STR1## in which X is a chlorine or bromine atom, R.sub.1 is an alkyl group containing up to 14 carbon atoms, which group may be substituted by a hydroxy group, an alkoxy group containing up to 10 carbon atoms, cyano group, amino group or lower mono- or lower dialkylamino group, an alkenyl group containing up to 6 carbon atoms or a cycloalkyl group containing 5, 6 or 7 carbon atoms, and R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 have the same meaning as R.sub.1 or each is a hydrogen atom, or R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 together with the nitrogen atom of the amine form a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic group which may also contain oxygen and which may be mono- or di- substituted by alkyl, and herbicidal compositions containing them.

Process for the manufacture of .alpha.-hydroxycarboxylic acid amides by adding water onto cyanohydrins in an aqueous medium containing 10-60% by weight of the oxo compound on which the cyanohydrin is based, with the aid of a catalyst dissolved in the reaction medium and selected from the group consisting of alkali metal-, alkaline earth metal- and alkylammonium salts of boric acid, at a pH from 7-11.
