摘要:
An airbag system for motor vehicles wherein the airbag mechanism is concealed behind a cover provided on the instrument panel. A tether is provided to restrain the cover from uncontrolled movement during deployment of the airbag. One end of the tether is fixed to either the airbag housing or to a fixed portion of the instrument panel, while the other end of the tether is detachably mounted to the cover. The detachable feature of the attachment means permits the cover to be easily removed for repair, inspection or replacement without the need to disturb the airbag or its housing.

The cover of a passenger-side airbag module is provided with an energy absorption zone to protect the passenger during head impact. The zone is in the form of corrugations which extend across the mouth of the airbag module. The corrugations crush upon impact, thereby absorbing energy.

An air bag module door and installation method whereby an air bag module door is joined to an air bag module unit by of one or more flexible legs. The flexible leg(s) permit the so joined module door to be desirably positioned within an opening in a vehicular interior trim. Once so positioned, the module unit is rigidly secured to the vehicle.

The requirement for a hinge, tether, or other connection between the breakaway door of an automotive airbag installation and a fixed attachment point is eliminated. This is accomplished by substituting a pressure-sensitive material connecting the door with the material of the airbag itself.

A tethered cover airbag system is provided for motor vehicles and the like having a panel formed with an opening in the vicinity of an occupant's seat and including an inflatable airbag mounted in a housing or canister for containing the bag in a deflated condition. The housing has an open end aligned with a panel opening to permit the airbag to pass outwardly when deployed for cushioning support for an occupant in the adjacent seat. A cover is provided for normally closing the panel opening to protect the airbag and is bodily movable to uncover the opening during airbag deployment. A flexible tether is interconnected between the cover and the panel edge or the housing for limiting the movement of the cover away from the panel during deployment. A suitable attachment system is provided for spreading the load exerted by the tether over a large area of the cover for reducing stress exerted on the cover during airbag deployment. The tether thus restrains the cover from moving around the passenger compartment of the vehicle in an uncontrolled manner during an airbag deployment and by reducing the load or stress exerted on the cover by the tether, the chance of break-up or fracturing of the cover into pieces is minimized.

A fastener is provided using an H-rib head which slides into place in a channel molded on a detachable door mounted on a vehicular instrument panel covering an inflatable airbag. The H-rib fastener has a mounting shank extending downward therefrom which is adapted to fit in a hole in a mounting substrate on the instrument panel. A resilient clip is mounted on the mounting shank of the H-rib for insertion into one of the holes in the mounting substrate for locking the fastener in place in the mounting substrate. Upon deployment of the airbag, the door is pushed out of the dashboard surface with the H-shaped connector detaching from the channel in the door. Accordingly, only a low lying channel remains on the backside of the door, thereby minimizing the potential of a snagged airbag. The fastener can also be released simply by pressing the clip fastener together to release the H-rib fastener from the instrument panel to gain access to the airbag assembly in order to service the airbag assembly if desired.

A vehicle air bag installation including an inflatable air bag assembly mounted in a rectangular opening in the vehicle instrument panel for deployment of the air bag through the opening. A rectangular net fit cover door engages a recessed abutment around the opening when closed. The abutment includes a plurality of spaced apertures around the opening for receiving fasteners for attaching the cover to the instrument panel. The fasteners comprise elongate thermoplastic resin bodies having a bulbous head, flared wings or shoulders extending from the bulbous head for providing height alignment, an intermediate bulbous portion for centering the fastener in the aperture and a lower end that converges to a flange to facilitate insertion through the apertures. Integral lock-in-tabs are provided in the flange portion to lock the fastener to the abutment. Integral channels molded into the underside of the cover substrate releasably engage the heads of the fasteners. The cover having the fasteners secured to channels in its underside is assembled to the instrument panel by aligning the fasteners with the apertures in the abutment flange. The fasteners are inserted into the apertures and are locked therein by the lock-in tabs to prevent inadvertent premature movement of the cover. Upon deployment of the air bag, the cover is pushed out of the instrument panel surface with the fasteners disengaging from the channels in the underside of the cover.
