Abstract: The present invention relates to a process for the production of copolymers comprising: (i) forming a reaction mixture comprising an elastomer and a vinyl aromatic compound; (ii) introducing the reaction mixture to a reaction vessel; and (iii) performing a polymerisation reaction wherein steps (i)-(iii) are performed in that order to obtain a copolymer comprising: (a) a phase comprising a reaction product of the elastomer with the vinyl aromatic compound; and (b) a phase comprising a reaction product of the vinyl aromatic compound wherein a sample of the reactor contents is obtained during step (iii) to determine of the formed copolymer: the content of phase (b); and/or ● the molecular weight of phase (b) wherein the determination of the content of phase (b) in the formed copolymer and the molecular weight of phase (b) is performed by a method comprising isolation of phase (b) from the sample of the formed copolymer and subjecting the obtained phase (b) to molecular analysis. Such process allows for the determination of the content of the phase (b) and of the molecular weight thereof in a quick and efficient manner, allowing for adjustment of process parameters such that the production of products that not correspond to the desired product quality is minimised.

Such copolymer provides in an improvement of the surface properties of moulded articles produced from such copolymers, as demonstrated by a reduction of the content of gels in the surface layer.

Abstract: An emulsion polymerization process of manufacturing a graft polymer composition with a reduced residual monomer content includes feeding a vinyl aromatic monomer, an unsaturated nitrile, and a first portion of an initiator to a reactor having a temperature of 50 to 63° C., the reactor containing an initial reaction system comprising water and a diene emulsion. After 10% to 35% of the first portion of the initiator has been added, the reactor temperature is increased to 65 to 85° C. The polymerization reaction runs for 0 to 30 minutes, then a second portion of the initiator and a third monomer are added, and the reaction is allowed to proceed for a second non-charging reaction time to produce the graft polymer composition. In the process, the vinyl aromatic monomer and the unsaturated nitrile are fed to the reactor in 10 to 40 minutes. The process time can be less than 145 minutes.

Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the production of an elastomer agglomerate composition, comprising the steps of: (a) providing a slurry comprising elastomeric particles in water, wherein the slurry has a temperature of 40 to 80° C., wherein the elastomeric particles are selected from the group consisting of polybutadiene particles, poly(styrene butadiene) particles comprising at least 50 wt % of units derived from butadiene, poly(acrylonitrile butadiene) particles and polybutylacrylate particles and combinations thereof, and wherein the slurry is substantially free of chemical agglomerants, preferably the amount of the chemical agglomerants being less than 0.01 wt % with respect to the total of the solids content in the slurry and any chemical agglomerants; and (b) forcing the slurry through an aperture to obtain the elastomer agglomerate composition.
