The method includes receiving a query comprising a semantic part and an abstract part, retrieving a set of images responsive to the semantic part of the query, and computing first scores for the retrieved images in the set of retrieved images. The first score of an image can be based on a relevance of that image to the semantic part of the query (and not to the abstract part of the query). The method further includes identifying a chromatic concept model from a set of chromatic concept models. This identification can be based on the abstract part of the query (and not on the semantic part of the query). The chromatic concept model includes an optionally-weighted set of colors expressed in a perceptually uniform color space. For retrieved images in the set of retrieved images, the method includes computing a chromatic image model based on colors of the image, the chromatic image model comprising a weighted set of colors expressed in the perceptually uniform color space and computing a comparison measure between the chromatic image model and the chromatic concept model. The retrieved images are scored with respective second scores that are based on the computed comparison measures. The retrieved images are ranked based on a combined score for a respective retrieved image which is a function of the first and second scores.

The graphic objects can be photographic images which are retrieved in response to a query and are clustered, based on values of first and second user-selected features assigned to the graphic objects. A navigation map is displayed on the user interface. The navigation map represents the clusters of graphic objects in first and second dimensions, corresponding to the first and second features. A user can manipulate a target window displayed on the navigation map using the tactile user interface. The target window encompasses a subset of the clustered graphic objects. A synchronized display of graphic objects in the subset of graphic objects on the user interface corresponds to the subset of clustered graphic objects within the displayed target window.

A system and a method are disclosed for developing a query. The system includes a display device for displaying elements, such as images, textures, color palettes, ad textual elements, which are selectable as query elements for forming a query. A physical space is provided on the display in which a physical object can be positioned. At least one physical object is positioned in the physical space, which is recognized by the system as having an identifier stored in memory to which a query can be linked. A sensor is provided for detecting a physical manipulation of the physical object in the physical space which represents absorbing a query element into a query. A query generator generates a query based on the absorbed query element. The query is thus associated in memory with the identifier for the recognized object. In this way, several physical objects can be manipulated on the display device, each one corresponding to a respective, single query.

An apparatus and method for detecting a region of interest in an image are disclosed. Image representations for a set of images that have been manually annotated with regions of interest are stored, along with positive and negative representations of each image which are similarly derived to the image representations except that they are based on features extracted from patches within the region of interest and outside it, respectively. For an original image for which a region of interest is desired, the stored information for K similar images is automatically retrieved and used to train a classifier. The trained classifier provides, for each patch of the original image, a probability of being in a region of interest, based extracted features of the patch (represented, for example, as a Fisher vector), which can be used to determine a region of interest in the original image.
