Abstract: A downhole wellbore planner builds a fracture model of a wellbore using fracture data identified from geological information. Using the fracture model and a target wellbore location at the formation, the wellbore planner may identify or select one or more lost circulation materials (LCMs). The drilling operator may then procure the LCMs before drilling the wellbore. In this manner, the impact of a lost circulation event may be reduced by having the LCMs on site or nearby.

Abstract: A method to design well trajectories includes determining dogleg severity as a function of inclination, and a corresponding rate of penetration performance of the tool by a hybrid model including physical modelling and machine learning correction. The method includes solving for optimal steering parameters to predict a dogleg severity as close as possible to a desired dogleg severity at a given inclination of the trajectory, which is repeated for dogleg severity and inclination combinations of interest. The rate of penetration for feasible points is also determined and a rate of penetration (or time-to-target) map can be produced. Potential trajectories are then evaluated relative to the map to estimate drilling time-to-target, and an optimal trajectory can be selected that has a lowest time-to-target while also being feasible for the tool and optionally avoiding risks or downhole obstacles.

Abstract: Lost circulation events are mitigated by determining a size and extent of a formation feature causing the loss of circulation. The formation feature may be determined based on surface drilling parameters, and can apply one or more of a mechanical specific energy, hydraulic, or aperture model. Using such model(s), the size of a fracture/void/aperture can be estimated and a treatment plan for a lost circulation vent can be determined. For instance, a mechanical specific energy of zero can indicate the presence of a void, the pressure at the standpipe can an extent of a formation feature, or the size of the formation feature can be estimated using drilling fluid flow rate, volume, pressure, or rheology. Determining a treatment plan can include selecting or designing a lost circulation material, a volume of lost circulation material, or alternative drilling methods.

Abstract: A drilling fluid management system may measure drilling parameters for a downhole drilling system, the drilling parameters including standpipe pressure. A drilling fluid management system may determine, based on the drilling parameters, a mechanical specific energy (MSE). A drilling fluid management system may apply a changepoint model to the MSE and the standpipe pressure to identify a plurality of MSE segments and a plurality of pressure segments. A drilling fluid management system may identify an expected MSE and an expected pressure. A drilling fluid management system may identify an MSE segment having the segment MSE that differs from the expected MSE by an MSE threshold, and a pressure segment having the segment pressure that differs from the expected pressure by a pressure threshold. A drilling fluid management system may identify a lost-circulation period based on an overlap of the MSE segment and the pressure segment.
