Abstract: Provided is a liquid crystal module being excellent in durability and manufacturing cost and exhibiting reduced variations in peak luminance that are caused depending on an azimuth angle during black display when the polar angle is large. The liquid crystal module includes: a liquid crystal panel including a first polarizer, a first substrate, a liquid crystal layer, an in-cell retardation layer (λ/4 plate of nx>ny=nz), a second substrate, an out-cell retardation layer (λ/4 plate of nx>ny≥nz), and a second polarizer, from a back side toward an observation side; and a backlight. The backlight includes a first prism sheet including a first ridge line, and a second prism sheet provided on a back side from the first prism sheet and including a second ridge line orthogonal to the first ridge line. The first ridge line is parallel to an azimuth at which the liquid crystal panel has a maximized transmittance in an oblique direction during black display.

Abstract: A liquid crystal display device includes a transmissive region and a reflective region, and includes a backlight unit and a liquid crystal display panel including a first substrate, a first alignment film, a liquid crystal layer containing liquid crystal molecules having positive anisotropy of dielectric constant, a second alignment film, and a second substrate in the given order from closest to farthest from the backlight unit, the first substrate including a first electrode disposed in the transmissive region and the reflective region and a second electrode disposed in the transmissive region, the first substrate or the second substrate including a third electrode disposed in the reflective region, the first electrode including one or more first linear electrode portions in the transmissive region, with no voltage applied to the liquid crystal layer, the liquid crystal molecules in the transmissive region forming a given twist angle θ1, the liquid crystal molecules in the reflective region forming a given twist angle θ2, and an alignment azimuth of liquid crystal molecules adjacent to the first alignment film or the second alignment film in the reflective region being parallel to the alignment azimuth of liquid crystal molecules adjacent to the first alignment film in the transmissive region.

Abstract: A method of fabricating a reactive mesogen (RM) guest-host polarizer is disclosed. The method includes forming an RM guest-host polarizer material on a substrate that promotes a substantially uniform planar alignment configuration of the RM guest-host molecules, forming a temporary layer on the RM guest-host polarizer material to align RM guest-host molecules of the RM guest-host polarizer material in the substantially uniform planar alignment configuration, performing polymerization of the RM guest-host polarizer material, and removing the temporary layer from the RM guest-host polarizer. The temporary layer includes at least one of a temporary fluid layer, a temporary particulate layer, a temporary gaseous layer, a temporary vacuum layer, and a temporary alignment substrate layer.

Abstract: A liquid crystal display panel includes a first substrate, a second substrate, a liquid crystal layer, a first polarizing plate, and a second polarizing plate. The first substrate includes a first dielectric substrate, first and second electrodes, provided over the first dielectric substrate and configured to generate a transverse electric field in the liquid crystal layer, at least either of which has a plurality of slits, and a first alignment film placed in contact with the liquid crystal layer. The first substrate further includes an inorganic insulating layer provided between the second electrode and the first alignment film. The difference between the refractive index of the inorganic insulating layer and the refractive index of the second electrode is smaller than or equal to 0.20. The thickness of the inorganic insulating layer is greater than or equal to 50% of the thickness of the second electrode and greater than or equal to 40 nm.

Abstract: The present invention provides a liquid crystal display device of a transverse electric field mode that may inhibit internal reflection and realize proper black display to which coloring does not occur. The present invention provides a liquid crystal display device including a first linear polarizer, a first λ/4 retardation layer, a first substrate, a second λ/4 retardation layer configured with a different material from the first λ/4 retardation layer, a liquid crystal layer that contains liquid crystals which are horizontally aligned in a case where no voltage is applied, plural electrode pairs that generate a transverse electric field in the liquid crystal layer by a voltage being applied, a second substrate, a second linear polarizer, and a backlight. In a case where a color of light emitted from the backlight is expressed by using chromaticity coordinates (x, y) of an XYZ color system, both of x and y are 0.32 or greater. The plural electrode pairs include a red electrode pair arranged in a red sub-pixel, a green electrode pair arranged in a green sub-pixel, and a blue electrode pair arranged in a blue sub-pixel. A white display applied voltage of the blue electrode pair is different from the white display applied voltage of the red electrode pair and the white display applied voltage of the green electrode pair.
