Abstract: Provided is a liquid crystal display panel (100C) including a transverse electric field mode liquid crystal cell (10), a first polarizing plate (22C) disposed on a back surface side of the liquid crystal cell (10), and a second polarizing plate (24C) disposed on an observer side of the liquid crystal cell (10), wherein: letting Δn be birefringence of nematic liquid crystals and d be a thickness of the liquid crystal layer for a liquid crystal layer (18), Δnd is less than 550 nm, the liquid crystal layer is in a twisted alignment state when no voltage is applied, and when polarized light for which the absolute value |S3| of the Stokes parameter S3 is 1.00 is incident, the |S3| of the polarized light transmitted through the liquid crystal layer (18) is greater than or equal to 0.85; and the first polarizing plate (22C) and the second polarizing plate (24C) are circular polarizing plates or elliptical polarizing plates having an ellipticity of 0.422 or greater, and each of the first polarizing plate (22C) and the second polarizing plate (24C) is substantially constituted only of a linear polarizing layer and a phase difference layer.
