AIR IS EXHAUSTED FROM THE HOUSING THROUGH FOUR DOWNWARDLY DIRECTED OUTLET PORTS AT THE CORNERS OF THE HOUSING UNDERSURFACE. CONTROL VANES ARE PENDULOUSLY SUPPORTED ON THE HOUSING AND EXTEND BENEATH THE OUTLET PORTS TO INTERCEPT THE EXHAUST AIR STREAMS AND THEREBY IMPART TORQUES TO THE GYROSCOPE TENDING TO ERECT THE ROTOR SPIN AXIS A SUBSTANTIALLY VERTICAL POSITION. AIR PASSAGES THROUGH OUTER AND INNER GIMBALS SUPPLY AIR TO THE HOUSING, AND THE PASSAGES ARE CONFIGURED SO A PRESSURE DIFFERENTIAL EXISTS ACROSS A ROTARY CONNECTION BETWEEN THE INNER AND OUTER GIMBALS. A PRESSURE DROP OCCURS GOING FROM THE OUTER GIMBAL TO THE INNER GIMBAL OR ROTOR HOUSING, WHEREBY AIR DELIVERED TO THE ROTOR DOES NOT TEND TO LEAK OUTWARDLY THROUGH THE ROTARY CONNECTION AND THE NEED FOR BULKY AND FRICTIONPRODUCING SEALS IS ELIMINATED.

In the cold rolling of fully-rolled finished gear teeth, the smooth periphery of a rotatable metal gear blank is forcefully engaged by the circumference of an appropriately arranged and profiled rotatable forming roll. The desired tooth-forming forceful engagement of the roll with the blank is established progressively over the several rotations of the blank. The initial engagement force is sufficient in view of the initial contact area to produce inelastic deformation of the blank material. However, the initial engagement force is of a magnitude substantially less than the ultimately desired engagement force.

A locking wafer is provided for inhibiting relative movement between two members angularly about orthogonal axes in which one of the axes coincides with the axis of a bolt and the like connecting the members together to have opposing substantially parallel surfaces. The wafer is adapted to be disposed between the opposing surfaces of the members. The wafer is formed of sheet metal and has a central hole substantially smaller in diameter than the wafer for accomodating the bolt and for positioning the wafer generally concentric to the bolt. Along its periphery, the wafer has an engaging portion which is effectively thickened relative to the remainder of the wafer. This portion is provided for engaging between the opposing member surfaces and for receiving at a location remote from the bolt at least a substantial portion of the inter-member forces produced by tension in the bolt. The locking wafer is described as, but is not restricted to use as, an element of an improved mounting apparatus for stationary mounting of a desired object, such as a friction wheel distance measuring device, to a desired supportive element in a desired attitude of the object relative to the element at a desired position of the object relative to the element. The mounting apparatus is comprised of sufficient ones and numbers of mounting members selected from a group of different mounting members. Each of the mounting members in the group defines therethrough at least one elongate slot through which a bolt or the like may be passed. Some of the members in the group are of substantially Lshaped configuration having first and second intersecting flanges disposed in substantially perpendicular planes. At least one of the flanges defines a slot. Some of the members in the group define means for fixedly mounting the object thereto.

An instrument for displaying pitch-and-roll attitude of an aircraft. A two-degree-of-freedom vertical gyroscope is suspended within a frame or housing, and is connected to an attitude indicator which moves in the same manner with respect to the frame and aircraft instrument panel as the aircraft moves in pitch and roll with respect to the earth. A novel linkage between the gyroscope and indicator transmits both pitch-and-roll position information over a single path to minimize the number of moving parts in the instrument, thereby reducing friction and other errors which affect accuracy and reliability of the attitude display.

A distance-measuring system is described in which a wheel is frictionally engaged with a surface along which measurements are made. The metering wheel is connected to a shaft which drives a portion of a photoelectric chopper which provides an indication of increments of metering-wheel travel. The chopper includes a disk on the shaft with a plurality of windows alternating with opaque areas in a circular path near the periphery of the disk. A mask having an arc of somewhat similar windows is adjacent and spaced a short distance away from the disk. A pair of lights and a pair of photosensors are located on opposite sides of the maskdisk set. Each photosensor detects light passing through a different plurality of windows in the mask and disk and, as the disk rotates, a substantially symmetrical variation in light intensity occurs. A minimum area noncollimated light source is provided and the mask is located nearer the light source than is the disk. A greater number of windows per unit length is provided on the mask than on the disk so that successful chopping of a noncollimated light beam is obtained when the mask and disk are spaced apart. The mask is mounted on a ring movably by an eccentric and constrained to move only angularly about its center and along a direction normal to a chord between the two photosensors. This permits the phase relation between the photosensor inputs to be adjusted readily and with high precision. Precise adjustment of phase relation and proper mask and disk construction permit the chopper to give usable signals at very high slue rates.

In a bistable switch mechanism having a biasing system defining a nonlinear negative spring rate which renders the mechanism responsive to excursions of actuating stimuli outside a selected range of values of such stimuli and which has a substantially lower negative spring rate for one position of the switch than for the other stable position, there is provided a resilient mounting for a movable contact which has structural configuration and spring stiffness arranged relative to the spring characteristics of the biasing system to define an overall negative spring rate for the mechanism which has a higher value of negative spring rate, for the one position of the switch, than the spring rate of the biasing system alone, when the force versus deflection curve of the bias system has an average slope between limits corresponding to said stable positions which is equal to the average slope of the corresponding curve of the entire mechanism between like limits, so that the operating characteristic of the mechanism in either direction becomes more nearly uniform and optimum.
