Abstract: An improved electrode material for electrical energy storage devices is provided by heating a carbonaceous material to provide a charred residue, then treating this charred residue in a fused salt bath under reducing and oxidizing (in the absence of oxygen) conditions. The resulting material contains occluded salts and these may, in a preferred embodiment, be removed.
