Low fix temperature toners are fabricated by a two step melt mixing and reactive melt mixing process wherein there is initially prepared, for example, using a melt mixing device, a composite of pigment and resin, followed by crosslinking of the resin component at high temperature and high shear to produce a partially crosslinked toner with substantially no unpigmented gel domains. The toners are particularly suitable for high speed fusing, show excellent offset resistance and wide fusing latitude, and superior vinyl offset properties.

A process for the preparation of encapsulated toners which comprises blending core momomer or monomers, free radical initiator, pigment, and an oil soluble shell monomer; dispersing the resulting mixture in a stabilized aqueous suspension; thereafter subjecting the stabilized droplets to a shell forming interfacial polycondensation reaction by adding a water soluble shell monomer or monomers; subsequently forming the core resin binder by heat induced free radical polymerization within the newly formed capsules; washing the toner suspension; subsequently removing water therefrom in a fluidized bed dryer to obtain a dry encapsulated toner with a surface moisture content of about 0.3 percent by weight to about 0.8 percent by weight; and thereafter blending the encapsulated toner with surface additives.

A low melt, high gloss toner resin with low minimum fix temperature, wide fusing latitude and wide gloss latitude contains a linear portion and 1 to 10 percent by weight of a crosslinked portion containing high density, crosslinked microgel particles, but substantially free of low density, crosslinked polymer. The resin is particularly suitable for high gloss applications, such as process color and color transparencies, and for high speed fusing, shows excellent offset resistance, wide fusing latitude, wide gloss latitude and superior vinyl offset properties. The resin may be formed by reactive melt mixing.

Disclosed is a process for preparing a phase change ink composition which comprises (a) a phase change ink carrier, said carrier comprising at least one nonpolar component and at least one polar component, and (b) pigment particles, said process comprising (1) selecting at least one of the polar carrier components to be a pigment particle dispersant; (2) admixing the pigment particles with the dispersant; (3) extruding the mixture of pigment particles and dispersant in an extruder at a temperature that is at or above about the peak crystallization temperature of the dispersant and below about the peak melting temperature of the dispersant, thereby forming a pigment dispersion; (4) subsequent to extrusion of the pigment dispersion, adding to the pigment dispersion any remaining polar components and the nonpolar component; and (5) subjecting the resulting mixture of pigment dispersion, polar component, and nonpolar component to high shear mixing to form an ink.
