Video camera which emphasizes an outline of a video signal produced thereby. A detail signal of a video image represented by the video signal is generated and which represents a vertical outline emphasis signal. Edges of the video image and burst-like portions of the video signal are detected, and an edge detection signal is generated that corresponds in one manner to the detected edges and that corresponds in another manner to the detected burst portions. The detail signal is adjusted by the edge detection signal or by a cross color suppression signal generated from the vertical outline emphasis signal. The video signal then is modified by the adjusted detail signal so as to produce the outline emphasized video signal. The detail signal may also be adjusted by a gain setting signal that corresponds to the vertical outline emphasis signal and which is compressed in level when the vertical outline emphasis signal is relatively low.

An edge enhancement circuit uses bandpass filters to separate an original video signal into low-, middle- and high-frequency band edge components which will be supplied to waveform shaping circuits. Each of the waveform shaping circuits detects an amplitude peak level of the edge component, generates a gain coefficient based on the peak level, and multiplies the original video signal by the gain coefficient. The results of multiplication are added together to generate a final detail signal. Thus, the edge enhancement circuit amplifies the amplitude of the edge component having a frequency approximate to the spatial frequency of the video signal to provide an edge enhancement based on a frequency characteristic corresponding to the spatial frequency of the video signal.

The present invention provides an edge enhancing apparatus (20) including a filter (51) to extract a horizontal high-frequency component of a video signal, a rise/fall detection detector (52) to detect leading and trailing edges of the horizontal high-frequency component of the video signal, and a waveform balancer (53) to multiply the high frequency component extracted by the filter (51) by a gain to generate an enhancement signal for enhancing the original video signal. The waveform balancer (53) works to make the gain a value larger than “1” when the signal level of the high frequency component at the leading edge of the video signal is positive while making the gain a value of “1” or smaller than “1” when the signal level of the high frequency component at the leading edge of the video signal is negative, and make the gain a value of “1” or smaller than “1” when the signal level of the high frequency component at the trailing edge of the video signal is positive while making the gain a value larger than “1” when the signal level of the high frequency component at the trailing edge of the video signal is negative.
