The present invention relates to a solvent for use in extracting oil from an oil bearing material, such as soybeans, with the solvent resulting in the selective extraction of a triglyceride rich oil, which contains 95% or greater triglycerides and non-polar constituents, with the solvent comprised of a hydrocarbon, preferably hexane, and a fluorocarbon, so that the solvent has a viscosity less than 2.6 centipoise and a polarity of less than 0.1. The present invention also relates to a method of using the solvent to extract the triglyceride rich oil, with the method including preferably extracting the oil at a temperature ranging between 35° C. and 55° C., and then preferably cooling resulting miscella to a temperature ranging between 15° C. and 25° C.

An improved soybean oil ester based epoxy resin and method of making the same is disclosed. A transesterification step is employed to liberate glycerol and to form new fatty acid esters with additional double bonds. The resulting fatty acid esters containing one or more double bonds are epoxidized by reacting with epoxidation reagent. The epoxidized esters serve as monomers in an epoxy resin system, which may be used to manufacture composite materials with improved mechanical properties as compared to materials obtained from epoxidized triglycerides. The soybean based epoxy resin may be used as low-cost and biocompatible coating materials for food and beverage cans.

A method for supplementing the levels of select amino acids in ruminants is provided. Amino acids are susceptible to microbial degradation in the rumen, where the relative susceptibility of an amino acid oligomer is determined primarily by its solubility in the rumen fluid. A method for designing and preparing microbial resistant amino acid oligomers based on relative solubility is also provided. Various compositions containing amino acids are disclosed and shown to resist microbial degradation in ruminants.
